Mobile BayBears News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - From the first inning until the final out, it was all Tennessee Smokies as they ripped the BayBears 13-0 on Tuesday night at Smokies Park.
It was an ominous start for the BayBears (29-42, 0-1) as Chris Rahl doubled with one out in the first inning and stole third, but Gerardo Parra struck out and Javier Brito grounded out to keep Rahl on the doorstep.
Tennessee (28-43, 1-0) wouldn't leave many of their runners on for the night as they scored seven times in the first three innings with five of those runs unearned on two Yunesky Sanchez errors. Adam Howard (6-4) left the ballgame after four innings before Matt Green relieved him in the fifth.
Forrest Cory worked the final three innings and allowed six runs. Jake Fox belted a two-run homer and drove in four on the night. Kyle Reynolds had four hits, three RBI and two runs scored while Doug Deeds had three hits and three runs scored for the Smokies. Donnie Veal (4-5) started for Tennessee and worked seven frames of two-hit ball. Jose Ceda got the final six outs with four strikeouts.
Brooks Brown (3-8, 3.97) hits the mound for the BayBears on Wednesday night at 6:15 central time in game two of the series with Tennessee. The BayBears will be back in Hank Aaron Stadium on Tuesday, June 24 when they take on the Montgomery Biscuits at 7:05 p.m. For tickets, call (251) 479-BEAR or log on to www.mobilebaybears.com.
BEAR CLAWS
Green had been on the disabled list since appearing for Tucson on April 6. He hadn't pitched out of the bullpen since 2005 until Tuesday. He was 12-6 for the BayBears in 28 starts last season. In the ninth, Rahl hit a ball down the left field line that was originally ruled a home run but was reversed by the umpires to a foul ball. Tuesday's loss was the most lopsided for the BayBears this season, and it was the eighth time that they have been shutout.
