JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (20-22, 57-55) fell to the Chattanooga Lookouts (25-17, 60-51) by a final score of 7-3 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Saturday night.
The Suns scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth and had the tying run at the plate before Ben Lasater struck out swinging to end the game. The win is Chattanooga's second in the series, plus their sixth straight against the Suns.
Chattanooga starter Will Savage (12-3) earned his Southern League-leading twelfth victory of the season by throwing seven strong innings, giving up a run on five hits. Jacksonville starter Jose Alvarez (1-4) took the loss while Shawn Tolleson got the final out of the game to notch his seventh save of the year for the Lookouts.
After the Lookouts took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, Lasater drove home Jacksonville's first run in the bottom of the third with a single to tie the game at one. Lookouts catcher Griff Erickson broke the tie with a two-run homer in the fourth that put Chattanooga ahead 3-1. The Lookouts added to the lead with a two-RBI single by Alfredo Silverio in the sixth, as well as a two-run homer by Kyle Russell in the eighth to put the score at 7-1.
Jacksonville's comeback bid in the ninth included back-to-back RBI singles by Jeremy Synan and Kevin Mattison to whittle the lead down to four, and a Jim Negrych infield single loaded the bases for Lasater, who struck out to end the game.
The Lookouts have outscored the Suns 18-4 in the first two games of the series, and Travis Denker had a 3-4 night at the plate where he scored a pair of runs.
The Suns and Lookouts will play game three of the five game series on Sunday evening at the Baseball Grounds. Sunday will be "Library Day" at the ballpark, with one boy and girl having the opportunity to win a new bicycle through the Jacksonville Public Library's summer reading program. Also, fans can show their library card at the box office for special admission to the game, and kids can run the bases post-game courtesy of Captain D's.
Right-handed pitcher Omar Poveda (7-5, 4.30 ERA) will pitch for Jacksonville while left-hander Michael Antonini (9-8, 3.65 ERA) will pitch for Chattanooga. Sunday's game will start at 6:05 p.m. ET, and fans can listen to the contest beginning at 5:35 p.m. with the U.F. & Shands Pregame Show on Jacksonville's WFXJ AM 930 the Fox and www.jaxsuns.com.
