Mobile BayBears News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In a ballgame that featured 19 runs, 20 hits, 22 men left on base, 15 walks, 19 strikeouts and six errors, the BayBears held off the Montgomery Biscuits in a 12-7 slopfest on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
For the fifth straight contest, the BayBears (67-44, 29-12) coughed up a first-inning run as Cole Figueroa singled off Tyler Skaggs to drive home Tim Beckham. Skaggs wiggled out of two bases-loaded messes in his three innings to hold the Biscuits (55-57, 21-21) to just one run but used up 84 pitches before exiting the game with six strikeouts.
Taylor Harbin smashed a home run in the fourth to tie the game at 1-1 before Montgomery pulled back in front with two in the bottom of the fourth against Kyler Newby. The BayBears scored the six runs, all of them unearned, thanks to four Montgomery errors. Daryle Ward tagged a two-run double against Sergio Espinosa after Neil Schenk (1-2) walked the bases loaded to give the visitors a four-run cushion.
Montgomery slid closer again as they picked up a pair in the sixth and one in the seventh against Bryan Woodall. Isaias Velasquez cracked his second homer of the season to pull the Biscuits within two. Greg Sexton blooped a single to right in the seventh, knocking in Velasquez to make it 7-6.
Clay Zavada (S, 2) entered with the bags full and two away in the seventh but induced a popout to second off the bat of Henry Wrigley to preserve the BayBears' lead. The BayBears blew the contest open with a five-spot in the eighth. Ed Easley provided the thunder with a three-run, bases-clearing double to put the BayBears up by six. John Shelby homered in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring.
The BayBears extend their lead in the South Division to 8.5 games over the second-place Biscuits, and the two squads will battle in the third of a five-game set on Sunday night at 6:05. Right-hander Bryan Henry (5-2) starts for the BayBears against fellow right-hander Shane Dyer (5-7).
The BayBears return to Hank Aaron Stadium on Wednesday, August 10 to battle the Mississippi Braves in the start of a five-game series at 7:05.
