TODAY'S GAME: The Generals will look to even the series today as they face lefty Hector Santiago for the first time this season. Santiago has been great at home during 4 starts, going 2-1, with a 2.14 ERA and a .181 opponents batting average. Jackson leads the season series 6-4. Also, the Generals are looking for their first home run in the month of August.
JACKSON GENERALS RECAP: - TThe Birmingham Barons scored five runs in the first inning and rolled Friday in the series opener at Regions Park, over the Generals, 7-1. The loss snapped a short two-game win streak for Jackson. The Generals lead the season series 6-4. The game was halted at the beginning of play by a 38 minute rain delay. Brandon Haveman was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, and Chih-Hsien Chiang finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Christian Marrero paced the Barons with a 2-for-3 game including a homer and three RBI's. Jackson starter Kenn Kasparek (4-3) made his first Generals start since May 11th and surrendered five runs on five hits in the first inning, but settled to allow just two runs on five hits in his final four innings. Kasparek took the loss, striking out three and walking one over five frames. Daniel Cooper made his Double-A debut for the Generals a pitched two scoreless relief innings. Charlie Shirek (3-5) pitched seven scoreless innings for the Barons to pick up the win, striking out three and walking none.
GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: Francisco Martinez has a hit in all 5 games with Jackson and is batting .286 (6x21) with 3 runs and 3 RBI. Carlos Triunfel went 0x3 snapping his hit streak at 10 games. During the streak he hit .415 (17x41) with 5 runs, 1 home run and 5 RBI. The hitting streak was the 3rd-longest by a Generals player this season. Vinnie Catricala has recorded multihits in 9 of his last 14 games, batting .414 (24x58) with 9 runs, 8 doubles, 1 triple, and 6 RBI. Scott Savastano has recorded multi-hits in 8 of his last 15 games, batting .358 (24x67) with 6 runs, 7 doubles, 1 home run, and 9 RBI.
TODAY'S STARTER: LHP James Paxton takes the hill tonight for Jackson and will face Birmingham for the first time. This will be James' 6th Double-A start since being promoted from A- Clinton on June 30th. Paxton was a Midwest League All-Star and also was named to the 2011 XM Satellite Radio All-Star Futures Game, playing for the World Team and pitched a scorless inning.
CHIANG NAMED EASTERN LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE MONTH...AGAIN: Chih-Hsien Chiang was acquired by Seattle at the trading deadline from Boston on July 31st, and for second consecutive month playing for AA Portland, he was named the Eastern League Player of the Month as he also won the award in the month of June. In 26 games during the month of July Chih-Hsien batted .430 (43-for-100) with 16 doubles, five home runs, 27 runs scored, 25 RBI, seven walks, three stolen bases and a .740 slugging percentage.
GENERALS LED LEAGUE IN BATTING DURING JULY: The Generals closed the month of July with the top batting average in the league during the month at .281. Five Generals batted .300 or better in the month. In 27 games Vinnie Catricala hit .364, with 18 extra-base hits and 24 RBI; in 28 games Carlos Triunfel hit .306; in 23 games Scott Savastano batted .321 with 10 double; in 20 games James McOwen hit .300; and Rich Poythress hit .316 10 extra-base hits and 16 RBI.
TODAY IN BASEBALL HISTORY: 1953 - Ted Williams is back in a Red Sox uniform after military duty in Korea. He will finish with 13 home runs and a .407 mark. 1988 - Rich Gossage got his 300th save as the Chicago Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-4.
