Suns a Walk-Off Winner over Smokies

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Jacksonville Suns (49-44, 14-9) used a three-run eighth inning before a game-ending, two-run homerun in the ninth inning from Kevin Randel ended a late rally for a 5-4 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (43-50, 11-12) in front of 7,571 Friday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Suns reliever Matt Peterson (3-2) picked up the relief victory after giving up a go-ahead homerun in the top of the ninth inning. Smokies closer Brian Schlitter (0-5) fell in the loss, giving up the game-ending homerun.

Tennessee took a fourth inning lead against Suns starter Cristhian Martinez. Blake Lalli doubled home Doug Deeds with two out before Nathan Samson singled home Lalli for a 2-0 score. The Smokies added to the lead with a run in the sixth inning on a Blake Lalli single to open a 3-0 advantage.

Jacksonville tied the game in the eighth inning. Logan Morrison belted a two-run double with one out to cut the score to 3-2. Following a=2 0wild pitch to move Morrison to third base, Mike Stanton drove Morrison home with a sacrifice fly to centerfield for a 3-3 score.

The Smokies regained the lead in the top of the ninth on a first pitch homerun from Doug Deeds, opening a 4-3 lead.

Suns third baseman Lee Mitchell led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk before a first pitch homerun to right field from Kevin Randel for a 5-4 final.

Suns LH Sean West will face Smokies RH Jay Jackson in game four of the series. The first 3,000 fans will receive a bobblehead of former Suns infielder Ivan DeJesus, Jr. The ZOOperstars will perform as well.
