Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - Donning Thanksgiving-themed jerseys, the Arizona Sundogs skated past the Austin Ice Bats 4-2 in their first of seven-straight home games at Tim's Toyota center in Prescott Valley. Torrie Wheat tallied two goals while Brent Kelly collected three assists in the contest.
Arizona opened scoring in the first at the 5:57 mark on a Torrie Wheat power play goal from Cory Stillman and Chris Bartolone. Arizona would see a 5-on-3 advantage after Austin's Jean-Francois Picard and Chad McIver would both be called for penalties. Less than three minutes later, the Ice Bats' Jordan Bianchin would put one past Arizona netminder Kris Mayotte.
Arizona would answer back quickly in the second period as Scott Seney would notch an even-strength goal at 3:51 from Brent Kelly and Torrie Wheat. At 12:37, McIver would be called for hooking, giving the Sundogs another man advantage. Torrie Wheat would score his second power play goal of the game and seventh of the season less than a minute into the McIver penalty. Dan Laperriere and Kelly would assist on the goal. At the 13:55 mark, Arizona's L.P. Martin would be called for high sticking. The penalty wouldn't hurt the Sundogs as Cory Stillman would grab a shorthanded goal from Kelly and Richard Demen-Willaume at 14:43 of the middle frame.
In the third period the two teams would exchange penalties giving one and other advantages on the power play. Neither team would be able to tally a goal until Austin's Michael Tucciarone would push the puck past Mayotte at 18:24 of the third. Jason Kenyon and Mike Possin were credited with assists. The Ice Bats' two goals wouldn't be enough as the Sundogs' special teams play would be the deciding factor in the 4-2 win.
Arizona netminder Kris Mayotte backstopped Arizona to the win, stopping 20 of 22 shots while Austin netminder Miguel Beaudry stopped 32 of 36 shots. Arizona finished 2 of 8 on the power play while the Ice Bats finished 0 for 8. Next up for the Sundogs are the Odessa Jackalopes on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25. Both games are scheduled for 7:00pm. Tickets are still available for both games. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box office, by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849) or online at www.gettix.net.
