Sundogs Outlast Eagles in OT, 5-4

LOVELAND, CO- The expansion Arizona Sundogs beat the Colorado Eagles 5-4 in overtime Friday night in the first of two exhibition games at the Budweiser Events Center. Torrie Wheat had a hat trick for the Sundogs including the game-winning goal at the 1:44 mark of the overtime period. Colorado's captain Greg Pankewicz had two goals and an assist in the Eagles loss. The game was marred with penalties as there were a total of 27 power play opportunities. The Eagles and Sundogs will face off again Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center for the final exhibition game of training camp.

The Eagles jumped out to an early lead on the Sundogs when Erik Adams made great backdoor pass to Konrad Reeder for a power play goal only two minutes into the game. Cory Stillman tied the game on a breakaway goal at the 8:40 mark on assists from Max Bull and Brent Kelly. The score would remain for the period with the score tied at one and the shots knotted at 13.

Arizona out shot and out scored the Eagles in the second period. Torrie Wheat converted his first of three goals at the 8:45 mark of the period and Cory Stillman tallied a power play goal at the 14:48 mark giving the Sundogs a 3-1 lead. Arizona out shot the Eagles 14-6 in the period.

Colorado came out flying in the third period and Greg Pankewicz scored his first of two consecutive goals on a slap shot from the right circle. Five minutes later, Pankewicz tied the game at three on a breakaway goal, he was assisted by Riley Nelson on the play. The Eagles continued to press Arizona and took the lead on another Pankewicz-Nelson connection when Nelson one-timed the puck into the net giving Colorado a 4-3 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. Arizona fought back and Torrie Wheat tied the game with 1:36 remaining sending the game into overtime.

In the extra frame, Wheat scored the game-winner in a scrum in front of the net only 1:44 into the period. The Eagles played two goaltenders, Tim Boron and Stephan Siwiec split time. Siwiec stopped 18 of 20 shots while Boron stopped 14 of 17 getting the loss. Kris Mayotte was in net for the Sundogs stopping 40 of 44 shots in the win. The Eagles and Sundogs will face off again Saturday night at the Budweiser Events Center.
