Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO - The Youngstown SteelHounds lost 4-3 in a shootout to the Dayton Bombers, in the Hounds first ever home exhibition game on Friday.

The first period gave the fans in attendance a thrill on the strength of two Chris Shaffer goals including one shorthanded goal. His first, came on a wrist shot Stephen Margeson took from the point, which Shaffer redirected into the goal giving the Hounds a 1-0 lead. Dayton answered four minutes later when Peter Pohl found Brad Farynuk at the top of the right slot for a one timer, tying the score at 1-1. Shaffer recorded his second goal with eight minutes remaining and the Hounds a man down. The returning forward got in front of his defender and was fed a nice lead pass from Paul Esdale giving the SteelHounds a 2-1 lead. Dayton knotted the score again at two before the end of the period when Pohl got his chance shorthanded, intercepting a pass in the Youngstown zone and beating Corey Wogtech for his second point of the night.

The Hounds took the lead in the second period when Esdale flew up the right wing after a loose puck, and snapped it over the shoulder of Dayton netminder, Dan LaCosta for a 3-2 lead. Once again, for every Youngstown goal, the Bombers had an answer. Bomber defensemen Nick Tuzzolino fired a wrist shot from the blue line that scooted underneath the pads of Corey Wogtech, tying the score at three at the end of the second period.

After a scoreless third period that saw the Hounds dominate the shot board and overtime period, in which both teams did not have very many offensive chances, the game would be decided by a shootout. Dayton forward Jamie Herrington, beat Jeremy Symington off the left leg pad for the only goal of the shootout to give the Bombers a 4-3 victory.

Youngstown begins their regular season on Friday, October 20th in Memphis and have their home opener slated for Friday, October 27th versus Rocky Mountain.
