
Sundogs Hand Colorado Second Loss of Season 7-2

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs handed the visiting Colorado Eagles their second loss of the season in decisive fashion, 7-2. Sundogs defenseman Michael Vernace tallied one goal and three assists while forward Cory Stillman notched two goals and an assist. Arizona netminder Chris King returned from an injury to keep his unbeaten streak alive at 3-0. The Sundogs' improve to 6-4 on the season and move into a tie for first in the Southwest Division with the Lubbock Cotton Kings.
Arizona opened the scoring first as they have the past three games against Colorado. Colorado's Jay Birnie would be called for hooking at 2:25 of the first and Arizona captain Chris Bartolone would put one past the Eagles' Tim Boron. Michael Vernace and Brent Kelly assisted on the power play goal. At the 9:14 mark, Vernace would collect his second point of the game, this time on a goal from Dan Laperriere and Torrie Wheat. Colorado and Greg Pankewicz would answer with a power play goal of their own at 11:03 of the period. Brad Williamson would assist on the play.
Just 33 seconds into the second, Colorado's Williamson would gather 14 minutes in penalties including two-minutes for high sticking, two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct and a 10-minute misconduct. Arizona would again capitalize on the man advantage on a Cory Stillman goal from L.P. Martin and Vernace. At the 3:51 mark, Fraser Filipic of Colorado would be tagged for hooking. Cory Stillman would tally his second power play goal of the period on a tip from a Bartolone shot from the blue line. Both teams would continue to take penalties throughout the second. Arizona would score its third of the period and fifth of the game with less than a minute left in the middle frame. Laperriere would put one past Boron on a pass from Karl Sellan and Martin.
In the third, Colorado would strike first at 4:19 on a shorthanded goal from Riley Nelson while teammate Chris Hartsburg was serving a two minute penalty for slashing. At the 8:23 mark, Christian Hommel timing his exit from the penalty box, caught Colorado shorthanded in their own zone, scoring his first goal of the season from Kelly and Stillman. The Sundogs weren't finished as Sellan would tally Arizona's fifth power play goal of the evening, capping off the 7-2 win in front of 3,714 fans.
Arizona's Chris King returned from an injury notching his third win of the season, stopping 34 of 36 shots faced. Colorado out shot Arizona 36-27 in the contest. Arizona finished 5 for 11 on the power play while Colorado finished just 1 for 7. Next up for the Sundogs are the Odessa Jackalopes on Friday, November 17. Game time is set for 6:00pm but will be tape delayed until 7:00pm on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
