Scorpions drop first leg of South Texas series

[ LAREDO, Tex. ]- The New Mexico Scorpions, proud member of the Central Hockey League (CHL), are still looking for their first road win of the year as they dropped a 4-1 decision to Laredo.

It was a tough loss for the young Scorpions as they outplayed the defending champs for a better part of two periods. Bucks' goalie Nate Marsters played well as was a mere five minutes away from his second career shutout.

Laredo scored early as Leo Thomas took a draw coast-to-coast just 4:01 into the game. For the rest of the first period and a majority of the second period, New Mexico looked strong peppering Marsters with 14 shots.

The third period proved to be the difference as Laredo tallied three goals. In the opening minute the Bucks Adam Rivet notched a power play goal giving the Bucks all the goals they would need.

Thomas would add his second goal of the game just minutes later giving the Bucks insurance. Bobby Chaumont later added a power play goal at the 10:52 mark to finish Laredo 's scoring.

Fans at the Laredo Entertainment Center were treated to the most exciting play in hockey when Jeff Genovy was awarded a penalty shot with 15:29 showing on the third period clock. Scorpions' goalie Walter Bartholomaeus was up to the task shutting the door and keeping it a 3-0 game.

The lone New Mexico highlight came on a two man advantage when Vladimir Hartinger notched his first goal of the season. Ryan McLeod and Matt Frick were awarded with the assists.

The Scorpions will travel to Rio Grande Valley Friday night for a 6:35 pm, Mountain Time face-off. The game can be heard ok KTBL1050 starting at 6:20 pm.
