Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The 2008 Central Hockey League Ray Miron President's Cup Champion Arizona Sundogs and the Corpus Christi IceRays squared off at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley Friday night in the first of five meetings between the two clubs this season. Turnovers spelled disaster for the Sundogs early on as the IceRays capitalized on two uncontested chances en route to a 4-3 overtime victory.
The Sundogs dominated the early part of the opening frame Friday night and capitalized on a Corpus Christi turnover to take a 1-0 led just 1:25 into the contest. Recently activated forward A.J. MacLean collected his first goal of the year, stabbing at a loose puck to the right of IceRays netminder Kris Tebbs. Defensive partners Chris Bartolone and Jon Landry connected with MacLean for assists on the early go ahead marker. The IceRays evened the score with an unassisted tally at the 13:27 mark as Chris Richards pushed an errant Sundogs pass attempt past an unaware Marco Emond for his sixth of the season. Arizona outshot Corpus Christi 13-5 in the opening 20 minutes of play despite the 1-1 score heading into the first intermission.
The IceRays pushed their lead to 3-1 early in the middle period with goals separated by just 19 seconds. While shorthanded, defenseman Chris Mei forced a turnover at his own blue line and skated the length of the ice before lifting a shot over a sprawling Emond to give his club its first lead of the game. John McNabb found the back of the net 19 seconds later for his second of the year for the IceRays' third unassisted goal of the game. The Sundogs cut Corpus Christi's lead back to one on rookie forward Peter Cartwright's second goal of the season from Andre Selander with 4:24 to play in the second frame. Arizona doubled-up the IceRays in shots in the second, 14-7 for a two-period 27-12 advantage.
The visiting IceRays seemed to be on their way to grabbing their second-straight victory away from the American Bank Center but Mark Kolanos tied the game to force overtime with less than three minutes to play in regulation, sending a one-timer past the glove of Tebbs. Defenseman Kyle Hood pinched from his defensive position and sent a centering pass to Kolanos in the slot with 2:12 to play.
Midway through the overtime period, Richards collected a pass from McNabb and sent a shot past Emond for his second of the game to give his club a 4-3 win and their third victory of the season.
Emond turned aside 17 of 21 shots in the overtime loss while Tebbs improved to 3-2-0 on the season, stopping 37 of 40 shots. Arizona was held scoreless on six power play chances while Corpus Christi was unable to convert four chances with the man advantage. With the loss, Arizona falls to 3-5-1 on the season and remains one point ahead of Amarillo for third place in the Southwest Division. The two teams battle again tomorrow night at 7:05pm at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley. Tickets are available by phone at 1-866-4-GET-TIX (1-866-443-8849), online www.gettix.net and in person at the Tim's Toyota Center Box Office.
