Sugar Land Blanks Revs, 5-0, to End Series
April 29, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release
The York Revolution endured a tough ending to their season-opening trip to Sugar Land, falling 5-0 to the Skeeters in front of 7,111 fans at Constellation Field on Sunday afternoon. The Revs will return home for their 2012 home opener at Sovereign Bank Stadium, featuring a pregame championship ring ceremony on the field, when they host the Camden Riversharks on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
Sugar Land struck for a first inning lead for the third consecutive game, plating a pair of runs early against York starter Jesus Sanchez. Jason Botts doubled to drive in a run, accounting for the Skeeters' third consecutive hit to open the game, and Josh Pressley's sac fly made it 2-0 early. Sanchez escaped further trouble, leaving the bases loaded, and went on to retire seven of the final eight batters that he faced in three innings of work.
The Revs had their chances early as Scott Grimes and Stephen Douglas led off the game with singles, but after Andres Perez narrowly missed a grand slam on a foul ball down the left field line, Sugar Land starter Derrick Gordon worked out of bases loaded trouble himself.
The Revs did not have a runner reach scoring position after the second inning, while Sugar Land managed to add to their lead.
After Bubba Bell led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double and advanced to third on a fly out, Botts perfectly placed a bloop single over the drawn-in infield, driving home Bell to make it 3-0.
The Skeeters added two unearned runs in the sixth inning, plating runs on a double play grounder, and on an RBI single to center by Botts, who enjoyed a 3-for-4 afternoon with three RBI.
Reliever Duniesky Flores (1-0) earned the win for Sugar Land with two scoreless innings, while Sanchez (0-1) suffered the loss in his first start.
The Revs were held to just five hits for the third consecutive game, and combined to score only two runs over the last three contests, all losses. For the four-game series, the Revs combined for just five runs on 21 hits in 36 innings.
York will look to snap the skid with their home opener on Tuesday night, as Corey Thurman (0-0, 0.00) gets the ball for his fourth consecutive home opener. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
