Barnstormers Bounced In Series Finale
April 29, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Hits were plentiful for the Lancaster Barnstormers in the first four games of the 2012 regular season. Runs were another story.
Eleven singles on Sunday afternoon produced only two tallies for the 'Stormers as they fell, 7-2, to the host Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the finale of the opening series at Regency Furniture Stadium.
The clubs split the series.
Southern Maryland jumped out to an early 2-0 lead off Alan Johnson (0-1). Paco Figueroa lined a single to left. With Casey Benjamin at the plate, Figueroa was put into motion. Second baseman Brad Boyer was screened and had the ball go right through, giving the Blue Crabs runners at first and third. Chin Lung Hu singled to right to drive in one. Richard Mercado drove in a second after a dropped foul ball kept his turn at the plate alive.
Singles by Jesus Merchan and Adam Godwin, who had three each combined with a hit batter to put Lancaster on the board in the top of the third, but the Blue Crabs broke the game open in their half of the inning.
Benjamin drew a one-out walk and raced to third on a double by Chin Lung. The Barnstormers opted to walk Matt Padgett intentionally after Johnson fell behind in the count. Mercado singled home on, and Mike Daniel tacked on two more with a base hit up the middle as the Blue Crabs stretched the lead to 5-1.
The remaining Southern Maryland runs were both driven home by Benjamin, one on a single that chased Johnson in the fourth, the other on a two-out solo homer in the eighth.
After putting together back-to-back three-run ninth innings in the series, Lancaster would strike again in the final frame on Sunday. Fehlandt Lentini opened the inning with his second single of the day, moved up on a one-out base hit by Merchan and scored when Jaime Pedroza rapped a single up the middle.
There would be no big rally this time, however, as Bryan Dumesnil recovered to get Godwin and Boyer easily to end the afternoon.
Following an off day on Monday, the Barnstormers open the home portion of their schedule on Tuesday evening against the Somerset Patriots. Lefty John Halama (0-1) will take the hill for Lancaster. He will be opposed by southpaw Doug Arguello (0-0). Tickets are still available for the game. It will be broadcast on 1390, WLAN-AM, beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45.
NOTES: Lentini hit safely in all four games of the series as did Chin Lung Hu...Lentini, Godwin and Benjamin had seven hits apiece...The Barnstormers were held to just six extra-base hits in the series...Five of those came against closer Jim Ed Warden in his two appearances...Lancaster scored seven of its 11 runs in the ninth inning...Mark Brackman struck out seven Blue Crabs in his 4 2/3 inning relief stint to tune up for a start against Sugar Land next Saturday.
