Lancaster Stormers News Release
The newest Barnstormers infielder collected four more hits early Thursday, leading Lancaster to a crucial 8-6 victory over the Camden Riversharks at Campbell's Field.
With the win, the Barnstormers stretched their lead to one game over the York Revolution in advance of a four-game, head-to-head series this weekend. Lancaster will need to split the series to capture the first half title.
Suarez singled three times and doubled, driving in three runs, to pace the 19-hit Barnstormers attack. He barely missed a fifth hit as his liner leading off the eighth barely hooked foul down the left field line. He eventually flied out to left, putting an end to a club record 10-hit streak.
After three previous lead changes, the Barnstormers jumped ahead to stay in the sixth. Ozzie Chavez triggered the rally with a bunt single and went to second on an errant pickoff throw by Josh Towers (3-4). Gilberto Mejia hammered a triple into right center to tie the game at 5-5. J.C. Holt singled through the drawn-in infield for a 6-5 lead. Ryan McKeller took over the mound chores and uncorked a wild pitch, sending Holt to second. Holt scored on Suarez' fourth hit, a lined single to right.
The Barnstormers added an insurance run in the seventh as Mejia singled home Aaron Herr with Lancaster's third hit of the inning.
Lancaster had to survive a tricky Camden eighth. Drew Macias singled to center to lead off, and Lloyd Turner followed with an 0-2 single through the right side. Alvin Colina, in his first game with Camden, crushed a fly ball to deep center. Holt tracked it down to make an over-the-shoulder catch for the first out. Ruddy Yan's grounder scooted under Tommy Everidge's glove for an error to score Macias and send Turner to third. Yan, however, was gunned down at second base. T.J. Beam fanned Jonel Pacheco to end the threat. Jonah Bayliss yielded a harmless one-out single in the ninth to earn his fourth straight save.
Everidge and Mejia chimed in with three hits apiece for Lancaster while Yan and Noah Hall had three each for Camden. J.D. Durbin (2-1) allowed eight hits and five runs over the first six innings to notch the win. He walked four and struck out five.
The Barnstormers return home to host the York Revolution in the opener of the four-game, first-half closing series on Friday night. John Halama will make the start against John Van Benschoten. Game time is 7:00. Tickets remain available.
NOTES: Suarez had more hits in his first 11 at bats for Lancaster than he had with Somerset earlier this season...Aaron Herr is the only other Barnstormer in history with consecutive four-hit games...Lancaster's previous high in hits this season was 18 against Southern Maryland on June 6...Angel Flores reached base on three of five plate appearances on Thursday to complete a road trip on which he was aboard on 12 of 17 trips to the plate.
