Strong Arms and Fleet Feet Guide Spikes Past Scrappers, 5-3, in Seven Innings

State College Spikes News Release

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Louis Davenport III logged five strong innings on the mound, Nathan Church delivered a three-hit performance, and Curtis Washington Jr. added a flash of dash to power the State College Spikes to a 5-3 victory over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in a game shortened to seven innings by inclement weather on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Davenport (2-1) yielded two runs on four hits and two walks over five innings while striking out two batters to earn his second victory and first as a starter. The Eastern Kentucky product gave up three of the four hits and both runs in his second inning. Davenport needed just 74 pitches to get through his five frames on the mound.

Church collected hits in each of his first three at-bats, including a double in the first inning. The UC-Irvine product started the Spikes' two-out surge with the two-base hit in that stanza, which was followed by Mark Vierling's RBI single.

Washington then showcased his speed on a heady play later in the opening inning, taking home on a wild ball four that also scored Matthew Ellis to swipe a run. The Spikes' (13-16) center fielder also stole his 10th base of the season in his 15th game, knocked in a run with his single in the second, and ran down balls hit deep to center in the first and fourth innings to snare two crucial outs.

All five of State College's runs came with two outs, as an errant pickoff throw by Mahoning Valley (17-11) catcher Duncan Hewitt allowed Zion Pettigrew to scored from third in the second as well.

The Scrappers responded with two runs in the second on RBI singles from Jerrod Belbin and Jalen Jones, then added a tally in the sixth when Jason Hinchman led off with a triple and scored on Dan Harwood's RBI groundout.

The game was halted just as the eighth inning was to begin by an approaching thunderstorm, and the game was called for the safety of the players when the lightning and rain arrived.

Christian Wall (1) earned the save as the final pitcher for the Spikes before the game's interruption. Wall allowed a walk and a hit batsman while working a scoreless seventh inning.

Mahoning Valley starter Deylen Miley (2-2) took the loss after allowing all five State College runs, three of them earned, on eight hits, three walks and a hit batsman.

Wednesday, the Spikes and Scrappers meet for a 6:35 p.m. matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Right-hander Griffin Miller (1-2), an Oklahoma commit who threw five scoreless innings to earn the win last Wednesday against Mahoning Valley, returns to the hill for State College. The Scrappers are scheduled to go with left-hander Jimmy Burnette (1-1) on the mound.
