Morgantown, WV - The Frederick Keys lost the series opener to the West Virginia Black Bears by a final score of 14-4 on Tuesday night. The Black Bears homered four times in the contest, twice in the 4th inning. The Keys or Black Bears have now homered in each of the seven games between the two teams, with both teams homering in the May 27 and June 22 game.
The Keys started the game hot as Mason Auer led the game off with a walk. The Keys lead off man was on base four times in the series opener. Tyler Doanes crushed a double to deep left field that skipped over the wall, leaving runners at second and third with no outs. Komistek lined a single into the outfield to score both runners and give the Keys a 2-0 lead.
Kamron Fields started the game for the Keys and was immediately put on the ropes as Garrett Spain swung at the first pitch Fields threw, launching it to right for the first of four Black Bears home runs in the game. Fields escaped the 1st allowing just one run on one hit and retired the side 1-2-3 in the 2nd.
In the Keys 2nd inning, Tremaine Spears led off the inning with a walk against West Virginia left hander Peyton Alford. Alford walked JP Fullerton and Auer to load the bases for Doanes' second at bat. Doanes lifted a sac fly to centerfield giving the Keys a 3-1 lead.
The Black Bears brought 13 men to the plate in the 3rd inning, scoring nine runs in the frame. Freylin Minyety, Kyle Hess, and Grant Hussey all doubled in the frame, while Ryan McCoy added a home run. West Virginia picked up eight hits in the frame as Jase Dalton came in relief of Fields midway through the inning. Seven of the eight runs scored by West Virginia were scored with two outs.
