Modesto Nuts News Release
Modesto, CA -- The offensive assembly line in the second inning was enough for the Modesto Nuts to earn their third straight win with a 5-2 triumph over the Stockton Ports on Saturday night at John Thurman Field.
The Nuts (4-1) loaded the bases in the second inning with one out against Ports (1-4) starter Kumar Nambiar (L, 0-1). Matt Scheffler started the string of offense with an RBI single. Juan Querecuto Jr. followed with a single of his own. Noelvi Marte added the third run of the inning with the third straight RBI single. Nambiar worked four innings and allowed just those three runs with six strikeouts.
Sam Carlson returned to the mound for the first time since 2017 and threw quite well. The righty struck out seven over four innings of work while allowing just an unearned run.
Stephen Kolek (W, 1-0) was the first out of the Nuts' bullpen and he faced the minimum in the fifth inning. Luis Curvelo (S, 1/1) slammed the door shut with a two-inning save. Curvelo struck out four while working around just one hit.
Marte had two hits in the game. Cade Marlowe reached base twice. Cesar Izturis Jr. recorded two singles in the win.
The Nuts eye their fourth straight win on Mother's Day. First pitch against the Ports on Sunday is at 2:05 p.m.
