MONTREAL - The Montreal Impact announced on Thursday that it has signed Italian striker Matteo Mancosu to a two-year deal with the club, using Targeted Allocation Money.
Mancosu, 32, was originally loaned to the Impact from Italian club Bologna FC 1909 on July 7, 2016. He scored three goals and recorded four assists in 15 regular season games, including seven starts, and 772 minutes in his first MLS season. He then helped the Impact reach the MLS Cup Eastern Conference Championship, registering four goals and two assists in five starts.
"We are very happy to have finalized this agreement with Matteo and to be able to count on his services for the next two years," said Impact technical director Adam Braz. "He was able to integrate well with the group upon his arrival last year and demonstrated his qualities on the field during the latter part of the season. This was the first collaboration on the player front with Bologna FC and it shows the commitment between both clubs to work strongly together. We hope to continue to grow this strong relationship with them."
He played the 2015-16 season in Serie A, scoring two goals in 21 games and 899 minutes. He began the season with Bologna FC 1909 before playing the second part of the season on loan with Carpi F.C. 1909. He also appeared in two Coppa Italia games, scoring one goal for Carpi in a 2-1 loss in the quarterfinal round against A.C. Milan.
Mancosu finished as the top goal-scorer in Serie B in 2013-14, scoring 26 goals in his first season in the Italian second division with club Trapani Calcio, playing a total of 40 games and 3,407 minutes, including 35 starts. He recorded four multi-goal games and also scored twice in three Coppa Italia games. He had previously helped Trapani win promotion to Serie B following its 2012-13 season.
In the 2014-15 season with Trapani, Mancosu scored 10 goals in 19 games and 1,546 minutes in Serie B, including 17 starts, before being acquired by Bologna FC 1909 in January 2015. He then helped the club from Emilia-Romagna win its promotion to Serie A, appearing in 15 regular season games, including nine as a starter, and two playoff games.
