Stormers Win Seesaw Battle Against Revs In Home Opener

May 1, 2015 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

In a game that saw a trio of lead changes, it was the Lancaster Barnstormers who came out on top with a 6-5 decision over the York Revolution in Lancaster's home opener on Thursday night, in front of 6,795 fans at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The two teams have split the initial four contests in the season's War of the Roses series. York is now 3-4 overall, while Lancaster improves to 3-5.

Following a lengthy pregame ceremony during which the Barnstormers received their championship rings, the Revs mounted a first inning threat as Brandon Boggs worked a leadoff walk and Wilson Valdez blooped a single. A wild pitch advanced both runners with one out, but Lancaster starter P.J. Walters struck out the side to escape the early jam.

The Revs did cash in on their opportunity in the second, as Valdez lined a double past diving left fielder Kevin Rivers with two outs in the inning, clearing the bases and scoring three runs for a 3-0 York lead.

Lancaster answered quickly, however, scoring twice in the second and third innings to grab a 4-3 advantage. Keith Castillo drove an RBI double to deep left-center and Yusuke Kajimoto ripped a two-out RBI single to right field in the second, while in the third, David Cooper lined a game-tying RBI single off the right field fence, and Henry Wrigley added an RBI groundout.

The Revs responded in the fifth as Eric Patterson led off with a solo homer to right field to knot the score. Bryan Pounds later launched his first long ball of the year with a solo shot to right-center, giving the Revs a 5-4 lead.

The Revs would maintain that lead through the fifth inning. Lancaster used singles from Blake Gailen and Wrigley to put runners at the corners with two outs, but reliever Joe Harris entered to strike out Rivers on three pitches, keeping the one-run lead intact.

Harris was victimized by a leadoff walk to Castillo in the sixth inning, however, as Lance Zawadski followed with a bloop single to set the table. After Kajimoto sacrificed both runners ahead, Tyler Bortnick greeted reliever Beau Vaughan with a two-run single to right, putting Lancaster ahead 6-5.

The Barnstormers bullpen retired 12 of the final 13 batters in the game including six of seven on strikeouts at one point, nailing down the victory in their home opener. Jason Urquidez was successful on his first save opportunity of the season with a perfect ninth inning, while Scott Gracey (1-0) earned the win after handling a scoreless sixth.

Harris (0-1) suffered the loss, charged with his first two runs allowed on the season.

Both starters took no-decisions. The Revs got to Walters for five runs on nine hits over his five frames, while York starter Shawn Hill was charged with four runs on seven hits over four innings of work.

The Revs will serve as the guests in Somerset's home opener on Friday night, kicking off a three-game road series at TD Bank Ballpark at 7:05 p.m. Anthony Lerew (1-0, 1.80) gets the ball for the Revs in the opener, facing Somerset's Mickey Storey (0-0, 0.00). Revs fans can catch the action live on SportsRadio 1350, woyk1350.com, and on the WOYK mobile apps beginning at 6:45 p.m. with Darrell Henry on the call.
