Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
LONG ISLAND, N.Y.- A three-run second inning proved too much for the Sugar Land Skeeters to overcome in a 5-0 loss to Long Island at Bethpage Ballpark in front of 5,905 fans. The Skeeters fall to 5-4 while the Ducks improve to 5-3 through the early goings of the 2015 campaign.
John Brownell picked up the win for Long Island, throwing eight shutout innings with four hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Daniel Meadows suffered the loss for Sugar Land. The southpaw went six innings and after being ruffed up in the first and second innings, settled in to allow just two hits over his final four innings of work.
Long Island took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first off Skeeters' starter Meadows. Bryan Sabatella opened up the frame with a double to right and the Ducks' right fielder swiped his third bag of the season by snagging third. Lew Ford drove in Sabatella with a single into left.
The Ducks expanded on the lead in the bottom of the second with a three run frame. Jose Morales singled to center to kick off the inning. Evan Crawford roped a double to left to give the Ducks a pair in scoring position. After a popup to first, Dan Lyons pulled a double to left to score both runs. Sabatella singled to center and Lyons scored on an error by center fielder Denny Almonte, giving Long Island an early 4-0 advantage.
Meadows settled in after the second inning, pitching four more innings of shutout baseball, yielding just two hits and walking none. The offense never found a rhythm, however, mustering just four hits in the shutout.
Long Island added an additional run in the seventh off reliever Robbie Weinhardt. After a leadoff strikeout, Sabatella doubled to right. The Ducks' right fielder moved up to third on a single by Erik Komatsu. Catcher Chris Wallace was unable to block Weinhardt's first-offering to Ford, allowing the Long Island leadoff man to push the lead to 5-0.
