Stormers Surging Back after Slow Start

May 18, 2016 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

An eight-game losing streak early in the season can be difficult to overcome, but it looks like the Barnstormers are on their way.

Fast out of the gate with a 5-1 start on the road, it looked like the 2016 edition of the Lancaster Barnstormers would be invincible. Then, the unforeseen happened.

The Barnstormers dropped the final game of that opening road trip in extra innings. That happens. Then, Lancaster ran into a Somerset Patriots buzzsaw, dropping the entire first home series to the Patriots and falling below .500. A quick series at Long Island failed to produce any wins, either. Lancaster's next homestand was moderately successful with the team splitting the six games.

However, Lancaster dropped a 12-2 decision at Somerset and found itself trailing, 8-2, after four innings the next night and staring at an 8-14 record.

Finally, the switch flipped. The Barnstormers came roaring back at Somerset and won that second game, 11-8. Josh Whitaker singled home tiebreaking runs in the ninth inning the following afternoon for a 6-4 win.

Upon the return home, the Barnstormers drilled the archrival York Revolution, 10-2, in the opener of the PNC War of the Roses. That win moved Lancaster back to within 3.5 games of the top spot in the Freedom Division.

Last night, pitcher Bryan Woodall improved to 3-0 on the year by tossing a dazzling 4-hit shutout en route to a 7-0 victory. He has not allowed an earned run in 28 2/3 consecutive innings and the Barnstormers are now 2.5 games back.

Lancaster has awakened.

Pacing the ballclub is Caleb Gindl, the steady right fielder who has ranked near the top of the league batting race since the season started and has hit safely in 21 of 23 starts. Whitaker has moved into the cleanup role and is averaging better than an extra base hit every two games. Kevin Ahrens has also been a steady factor, playing nearly every day at shortstop as has Charlie Cutler, who is thriving on the chance to catch every day.

Mike McDade and Josh Bell, the two switch hitting corner infielders are turning the corner. Both got off to sluggish starts, but a change in prescription lenses has turned McDade loose, and Bell has started to hit some VERY impressive home runs, including one out of the stadium, over the back advertising wall in deep right center.

On the pitching side, Bryan Woodall has picked up where he left off last year, throwing quality starts in each of his first five efforts. The bullpen is beginning to settle down with Cory Burns looking like another premier Barnstormers closer.

The skid is in the past. The Barnstormers are once again looking like their advance billing as a mighty force in 2016. So get to the ballpark and get on board, because this season is going to be a great ride.
