
Bluefish Add Two Former Major Leaguers to Pitching Staff

(Bridgeport, Conn.) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signings of two former big league pitchers, Blake Beavan and Robert Carson. Outfielder Anthony Giansanti, a Connecticut native, has also been signed.
"We're very happy to have players with the experience that Blake and Robert have, and it's always great to have a local product like Anthony as well," says Bluefish Manager Luis Rodriguez. "The three of them will be great assets to our team this season."
Blake Beavan comes to Bridgeport for his ninth season of professional baseball and first in the Atlantic League. Last year, the pitcher appeared in four games for Triple-A Reno (Arizona) of the Pacific Coast League, where he struck out nine batters in 15.2 innings. The 27-year-old made his professional debut in 2008 after being selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round (17th overall) of the MLB draft. He spent three seasons with the Rangers organization before being traded to the Seattle Mariners with Justin Smoak, Josh Lueke, and Matthew Lawson, in exchange for Cliff Lee and Mark Lowe. The righthander would then make his Major League Debut with Seattle in 2011. He spent parts of the next four seasons with the Mariners big league club, making 54 mound appearances (44 starts) and collecting 16 wins with a 4.61 ERA and 137 strikeouts in 293.0 innings. In 139 career minor league appearances, Blake owns a 52-33 record with a 3.97 ERA and 425 strikeouts in 734.2 innings of work.
Robert Carson returns to Bridgeport during his tenth season of professional baseball and second in the Atlantic League. He began the 2016 campaign with Monclova of the Mexican League, where he made seven appearances (all starts) and collected 19 strikeouts in 28.2 innings of work. Last year with the Bluefish, the southpaw pitched in 23 games (12 starts) and finished with a 2.88 ERA with 80 strikeouts in 78.0 innings. Robert was originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 14th round of the 2007 MLB draft, and made his Major League debut in 2012. He spent parts of the 2012 and 2013 seasons with the Mets, where he appeared in a total of 31 games and collected a 6.28 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 33.0 innings of work. In 246 career minor league games, Carson owns 38 wins with a 4.23 ERA and 557 strikeouts in 693.2 innings pitched.
Anthony Giansanti comes to Bridgeport during his seventh season of professional baseball and first in the Atlantic League. The Niantic, CT native began the 2016 campaign with Double-A Tennessee (Chicago Cubs) of the Southern League, where he hit .229 with one home run, three RBI, and six runs scored in 18 games played. The 27-year-old was originally selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 49th round of the 2009 MLB draft, and made his professional debut in 2010 as a member of the Cubs organization. He has spent his entire career with the Cubs, reaching the Triple-A level in 2013 and 2015. In 498 career minor league games, Anthony owns a .255 batting average with 19 home runs, 183 RBI, and 183 runs scored.
In a corresponding roster move, outfielder Ruben Sosa, Jr. has had his contract purchased by Laguna of the Mexican League.
