Bloop Double Costs Martinez as Barnstormers Squeak By

(Lancaster, Pa.) - On a night when hits were hard to come by, the Lancaster Barnstormers prevailed by the slimmest of margins, edging the York Revolution 2-1 on Wednesday night at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The loss was the third in a row for the Revs (15-12), who still look for their first win over the Barnstormers (13-13) in the War of the Roses presented by PNC Bank.

Austin Bibens-Dirkx (2-3) earned the win after allowing just one run on three hits in six innings of work, walking one and striking out seven. Jorge Martinez (1-2) was the hard-luck loser after giving up a pair of runs on two hits in seven quality innings. Cory Burns nailed down his fifth save with a scoreless ninth, working around a Joel Guzman infield single to secure the victory.

Guzman pounded a solo home run to left to give the Revs a lead in the second inning. That lead was short-lived, though, as Lancaster got a couple men aboard on walks. With two down, Michael Crouse lifted a ball to shallow left center that James Simmons misjudged. Both men scored on the gift double and the Barnstormers had a 2-1 lead.

From there the pitching took center stage as Martinez dueled Bibens-Dirkx. Bibens-Dirkx settled in to keep the Revs off the board in the next four innings, while Martinez put up zero after zero through the seventh, at one point retiring 10 in a row.

After Bibens-Dirkx's exit, the Lancaster bullpen took care of the rest. Josh Wall tossed a perfect seventh, while Scott Gracey worked around a Michael Rockett two-out single to get through the eighth unscathed. Burns did the rest as the home side moved within a game and a half of the first-place visitors in the Freedom Division standings.

Guzman's homer was his fourth of the season and gives him eight RBIs over his last five games.

In addition to the Crouse double, Logan Schafer and Sean Halton had the other two hits on the night for the Barnstormers.

Notes: Jason Repko left the game after legging out an infield single in the first inning and was replaced by Rockett. Martinez's seven innings matches the longest outing for a York starter this season, tying him with James Simmons's seven-inning no-decision at Southern Maryland on May 7. York's three-game losing streak is only the second losing streak of the season for the Revs, who lost four straight, April 26-28. Matt Neil takes the hill against J.D.
