Stormers Surge, Then Survive York to Take Series
July 19, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Lancaster Barnstormers saw a game turn from a blowout to a nail biter, yet hung on to take an 8-6 decision over the York Revolution Thursday afternoon at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Blake Gailen homered in back-to-back innings, Nate Reed dazzled and Matt Reynolds eventually notched his 17th save of the season to secure a Barnstormers' win.
Lefty Nate Reed (7-3) earned the win in what was his best start of the season. The Reading native threw seven innings of one run ball, allowing just five hits and striking out a season-high 10.
The first run of the game was scored by York's Ryan Dent, who doubled and crossed the plate on a Luis Cruz single in the second. Lancaster responded with three of its own in the same frame. Ryan Casteel led off the bottom of the inning with a double down the line in left to put a runner in scoring position. Trayvon Robinson followed with a single past third, and K.C. Hobson pounded an RBI single off the wall in right to tie the game. A delayed double steal brought Robinson home from third with the go-ahead run. Carlos Garcia tacked on a single up the middle to score Hobson with the third run.
The score remained until an outburst in the sixth inning. Lancaster brought eight to the plate and scored four runs to pad a 7-1 lead. Blake Gailen triggered the inning with a solo shot over the Haller Pavilion deck for his 15th long ball of the season. One out later, Robinson singled to left and reached third base when Alexi Casilla made an errant force play throw to second on a Hobson grounder. Nate Coronado flared an RBI single to right center, driving in one. Garcia rapped a double inside the bag at third to score two more.
Gailen once again found the seats off Revs' reliever Mike McGee for his league-leading 16th homerun of the season.
With Reed at 116 pitches through seven innings, Barnstormers manager Ross Peeples elected to go to the bullpen. Jared Lakind entered the game and was quickly greeted with trouble as Jared Mitchell singled, and Casilla reached on Lakind's throwing error. Isaias Tejeda and Melky Mesa produced RBI singles to slice the lead to 8-3. Lakind fanned the next two hitters and had Jose Cuevas at 1-2 before the York third baseman drilled a double over Grant Desme's head in left, driving home two more. Luis Cruz took Garrett Granitz to right center with a bloop hit to plate Cuevas with the fifth run of the inning.
Matt Reynolds yielded a two-out double to Tejeda in the ninth but struck out the side otherwise to preserve the lead and record his 17th save.
The Lancaster Barnstormers hit the road for a weekend set with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs before starting a seven game homestand next Monday at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Brooks Hall will start the opener on Friday against lefty Zach Britton. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
Tickets can be purchased on our website here and all games are available on the Lancaster Barnstormers' YouTube Channel.
NOTES: Gailen's two-homer game was his first of the year...Reed became the second pitcher in club history (Eric Junge the other) to strike 10 or more in at least three different starts...He has fanned 63 this season and 306 as a Barnstormer, leaving him 19 short of Ross Peeples' career record...Lancaster stole three bases, all in the second inning, for a total of 157 on the season.
