Brampton Steelheads News Release

The Steelheads suited up for their third game in as many days today against the Guelph Storm. The Trout sought to end their current losing slump, and the Storm looked to bounce back after a loss of their own. Jake Brennan and Justin Nichols both got the nod for this tilt to close out the season series.

The Steelheads got the jump on the Storm early, creating a pair of scoring chances before allowing their first shot against. Stefan LeBlanc and Luke Burghardt dropped the mitts behind Brennan's goal, further igniting a spark in both teams. The Trout went to the penalty kill nearing the halfway mark of the period. Brennan was solid on the kill, and Mississauga eliminated the chance. As play became increasingly energetic, the Steelheads continued to pressure Nichols with a number of quality scoring chances, but Guelph held firm. Mississauga carried a 14-12 edge in shots heading into the intermission.

Just a minute into the middle frame, MacIntyre picked off a pass at his own blue line and took it the other way on a partial break. He did well to avoid the defender and get the shot off, but Nichols got the pad out for the stop. Tyler Boston opened the scoring, deflecting an already bouncing puck past Brennan. Everett Clark and Brock Philips threw down in the game's second fight shortly after. Ryan Foss extended Guelph's lead to two, banging in a rebound glove side on Brennan. The Steelheads four-man unit made another appearance in the second period, but they killed off the chance. Josh Burnside cut into the lead, picking up the puck in the slot and beating Nichols on the backhand as Mississauga began to press. It was not long after that Marc Stevens reinstated the Storm's two-goal lead. Burnside nearly got his second goal of the period, but hit the crossbar as time in the second expired.

Nathan Bastian opened the third with a nice scoring chance, receiving a pass from McLeod, but Nichols stopped the opportunity. Bastian's chance was just the beginning of the third period goal production. Guelph potted three unanswered goals, opening a wide lead as they outplayed the Trout in the first half of the period. The Steelheads would not go down quietly, and they began to mount a comeback. Bobby MacIntyre and Brandon Devlin both scored on Mississauga power plays and the Steelheads were right back in the game. McLeod kept up the momentum, jumping on his own rebound to bring the Trout within two. McLeod's goal capped off three unanswered Mississauga goals in 1:17. Brennan headed to the bench in favour of the extra skater with around two minutes to go. Despite great pressure from the Trout, Pius Suter iced the game with an empty-netter, bringing the final score to 7-4 for the Storm.
