Guelph Storm News Release
The Storm picked up two points in three games played this week playing a midweek contest against the Owen Sound Attack on Wednesday night and back to back games on Friday and Saturday. On Wednesday in Owen Sound, the Storm had a 2-1 lead just over the midway mark of the third, but couldn't hold the lead and the Attack came back to tie it up and eventually win the contest 3-2 in a shootout. Rafael Rotter scored his first of the season and Peter Holland recorded the other Storm goal of the night. On Friday night in Guelph the Attack were in town for the back end of a home and home. Brandon Buck-in his first week back from injury-scored both Storm goals in the Storm's 5-2 loss. Saturday night against the Erie Otters the Storm got goals from Mike Caruso, Nathan Martine, Anthony Nigro and Brandon Buck, but could not pull out the win as they would eventually lose in overtime 5-4 to the Otters. The Storm outshot their opponents 134-91 this week. With two points this past weekend the Storm now have a record of 8-14-4-2 and 22 points.
Brandon Buck Guelph Storm Player of the Week- During his first week back from an ankle injury suffered in late October, Buck recorded five points-three goals and two assists- in three games. Held off the scoresheet on Wednesday in Owen Sound, the Delaware native scored both Storm goals in the 5-2 loss to the Attack on Friday night in Guelph. He was also awarded with second star honours for his efforts. On Saturday night in Erie, the 19 year old finished off the week recording one goal and two assists in the 5-4 shootout loss. Buck is currently third on the Storm in scoring with 23 points and tied for first in goals with 11. With this weekends point totals Buck now has nine multiple point games on the season.
Friday, December 7th: Guelph Storm vs. Saginaw Spirit, 7:30 pm
Sunday, December 9th: Guelph Storm at Saginaw Spirit, 7:30 pm
- The Saginaw Spirit visit the Sleeman Centre for the first time this year on Friday night while the Storm return to Saginaw two days later. These two clubs play each other four times this season with the next two match ups on January 26th and February 8th in Saginaw and Guelph respectively. Last year Saginaw won the regular season series winning three of the four contests. So far this season the Spirit have a record of 11-11-3-1 and 26 points.
- Friday's game is the annual Teddy Bear Toss game sponsored by Brent Johnson from Wellington Motors. Over the past six seasons, Storm fans have donated in excess of 13,000 new, or 'slightly loved' stuffed toys that have been donated to charities in Guelph and around the world. As always, the Storm invites their fans to celebrate their first goal of the game on December 7th by throwing a stuffed toy onto the ice surface.
Saturday, December 8th: Guelph Storm vs. Sarnia Sting, 7:30 pm
- The Storm host the Sarnia Sting on Saturday night for the second consecutive home game of the weekend. Saturday's match up marks the second contest between these two teams as the Storm defeated the Sting 4-1 back on November 2nd. The next two match ups take place in the month of February when the Storm travel to Sarnia on the first and the Sting return to Guelph on the 24th. So far this season the Sting have a record of 17-12-0-0 and 34 points. This contest will be the first time former Sting and former Storm Harrison Reed and Jamie Arniel will play against their previous teams.
Drew Doughty Invited to Team Canada Selection Camp
Storm defenceman Drew Doughty has been invited by Hockey Canada to attend Canada's National Junior Selection Camp from December 10-14, 2007 at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena in Calgary, AB. Players and staff will travel to Calgary on Monday, December 10th, and will take to the ice that same evening at the Father David Bauer Olympic Area in Calgary (view the full schedule at www.hockeycanada.ca ). All practices at the Selection Camp, Dec. 10-14th are open to the public free of charge. Details on the selection camp will be announced next week at www.hockeycanada.ca.
Guelph Storm Holiday Hockey Camp-Sold Out!
The Guelph Storm would like to announce that the Holiday Hockey Camp for hockey players age 5-12 held on January 2nd and 3rd, 2008 is now sold out. The Camp will be held at the Sleeman Centre in two sessions. The first session will be held on January 2nd at 9:00 am-10:50 am and the second on the 3rd at 9:00 am-10:50 am. Due to high demand the Storm are hoping to add a second session that would take place on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Keep checking back to www.guelphstorm.com for further details.
Guelph Mercury "Books for Kids" Nights
Friday, December 14th the Guelph Storm host the Guelph Mercury "Books for Kids" Night. Give the gift of reading this holiday season to underprivileged children in our community by donating new, unwrapped books that are suitable for children ages newborn to 18 years old. Guelph Storm Performers of the Month-November
Thomas McCollum-Guelph Storm Goaltender of the Month and nominee for OHL Goaltender of the Month
McCollum was named the Guelph Storm's Goaltender of the Month after posting a 2-4-1-1 record, along with a 2.56 goals against average and 0.914 save percentage in nine games played during the month of November. The 17-year old netminder also picked up two second and two third star honours for his play during the month. The Sanborn New York native is now 5-9-2-2 on the season and has a goals against average of 3.16 and a save percentage of 0.895.
Peter Holland-Guelph Storm Rookie of the Month and nominee for OHL Rookie of the Month
Peter Holland was named the Guelph Storm's Rookie of the Month after scoring eight points in the month of November. The 16 year old forward scored three goals and added five assists for eight points in eleven games.
Holland recorded his first multiple point game in early November during the Storm's 8-2 win over the London Knights. The Caledon native added two more multiple point games later in the month against the Plymouth Whalers and the Ottawa 67s. So far this year Holland has 4 goals and 5 assists and is currently tied for the lead in Storm rookie scoring with 9 points.
Michael Caruso- Guelph Storm Defenceman of the Month and nominee for OHL Defenceman of the Month
Caruso was named the Guelph Storm's defenceman of the month after putting up six points in 11 games. The 19 year old also had a plus/minus rating of three, recorded one multiple point game and was awarded with two third star honours and one second star honour for his efforts.
Caruso is currently second in defenceman scoring on the Storm and fifth overall. In 22 games this season the Mississauga native has 15 points and is five points away from surpassing his career total of 20 points that he recorded last season in 64 games.
Luke Pither-Guelph Storm Performer of the Month and nominee for OHL Performer of the Month
Pither was named the Guelph Storm's performer of the month after putting up nine points-three goals and six assists-during the month of November. The 18 year old recorded three multiple point games and was awarded with a first star honours in the Storm's 4-1 win over Sarnia.
Pither currently leads the Storm in points with 31 and goals with 11. His plus/minus rating of +2 is third on the team. In 28 games played this season, the Burketon native has 31 points surpassing his career high and entire point total for the 2006-07 season.
