Storm Open Postseason with 3-2 Victory over Force
Kearney, NE. - The Tri-City Storm opened postseason play Friday night at the Viaero Center with a 3-2 comeback victory over the Fargo Force. After falling behind in the 2nd period, the Storm scored twice in the final nine minutes of the 3rd period to win Game #1 of the Western Conference Semifinals. Mark Estapa netted the game-winning goal with less than five minutes to play. Cole McWard and Hunter Strand also scored goals in the game for Tri-City. Todd Scott recorded his first-career postseason win in the Clark Cup Playoffs in goal for the Storm. Tri-City hosts Fargo Saturday night at the Viaero Center for Game #2 of the Western Conference Semifinals. After taking Game #1, the Storm can advance to the 2021 Western Conference Final with an additional victory in the best two-of-three series. Puck drop for Game #2 at the Viaero Center is scheduled for 7:05pm.
Cole McWard scored the Storm's opening goal of the postseason at 10:22 of the 1st period on the power-play. McWard's goal was assisted by Isac Jonsson and Matthew Knies. Fargo answered back with a power-play goal from Jack Peart to tie the game at 1-1. Tristan Broz and Ryan Siedem each recorded an assist on the scoring play. The Force outshot the Storm 8-7 in the 1st period.
Bear Hughes netted the only goal of the 2nd period to give Fargo a one-goal lead in the game. Hughes' goal was scored at 7:03 of the 2nd period and was assisted by Ryan Siedem and Jeremy Davidson. Tri-City outshot Fargo 6-2 in the 2nd period. Tri-City was 0-11-0-0 when trailing after the 2nd period during the regular season.
With less than nine minutes to play in the 3rd period, Hunter Strand scored a power-play goal for Tri-City to tie the game at 2-2. The goal was assisted by Cole McWard and Carter Mazur. At 15:31 of the 3rd period, Mark Estapa scored a power-play goal to put the Storm ahead in the game 3-2. The goal was assisted by Conner Hutchison and Vinny Borgesi. Tri-City outshot Fargo 10-5 in the 3rd period and 23-15 in the game.
Todd Scott recorded the win in net after making 13 saves on 15 shots. Brennan Boynton picked up the loss in goal for Fargo after making 20 saves on 23 shots.
Tri-City returns to action on Saturday, May 1st in Game #2 of the Western Conference Semifinal round of the 2021 Clark Cup Playoffs. The game will be played at home at the Viaero Center.
