Storm Defeat Rival Lancers 5-2 in Second Preseason Game

Kearney, NE. - The Tri-City Storm defeated its rival Omaha Lancers by a final score of 5-2 Wednesday night at the Viaero Center in Kearney. With the win, Tri-City now leads the preseason standings for the 2020 Corn Cup. The Storm returns to action Friday night in a road game against rival Lincoln. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:05pm.

Tri-City scored less than three minutes into Wednesday's contest to take an early 1-0 lead over the Lancers. Isac Jonsson netted his first goal of the preseason to give the Storm the lead. The goal was assisted by Drew Montgomery and Sam Rhodes. Mason Wheeler scored at 9:19 of the 1st period to increase Tri-City's lead by two goals. Mike Posma provided the assist on the scoring play. Minutes later, at 11:48 of the 1st period, Omaha scored to cut the Storm lead in half. The Lancers' goal was scored by Zakary Karpa and was unassisted. Forty-five seconds later, Tri-City's Davis Burnside scored his first goal of the preseason to provide an answer to the Lancers' scoring play. Burnside's goal gave Tri-City a 3-1 lead and was assisted by Mark Estapa and Mike Posma. The Storm outshot the Lancers 12-5 and carried a two-goal lead into the 2nd period. No goals were scored by either team in the 2nd period and Tri-City outshot Omaha 13-8. The Storm led 3-1 entering the 3rd period.

Only ten seconds into the 3rd period, Tri-City's Vinny Borgesi scored an even strength goal to increase the Storm's lead to three. Borgesi's goal was assisted by Davis Burnside. Exactly one minute later, Omaha's Hunter McDonald struck shorthanded to cut the Tri-City lead down to two goals. McDonald's goal was his first of the preseason and was unassisted. The final goal of Wednesday's game was scored by Tri-City's Drew Montgomery at the 17:31 mark of the 3rd period. Montgomery's goal was assisted by Chris Hedden and Mike Posma. The Storm outshot the Lancers 12-5 in the 3rd period, 37-18 overall, and won the game by a final score of 5-2.

Grant Riley recorded the win in net for the Storm to improve to 1-0 in the preseason. Riley turned aside 16 of the Lancers' 18 shots on net. Davis Burnside was named the Game's 1st Star, Drew Montgomery picked up 2nd Star honors, and Mike Posma was named the 3rd Star of the Game.
