Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Waterloo, Iowa - In 1998, the Waterloo Black Hawks played a nerve-wracking game at Young Arena on November 25th. Despite allowing two shorthanded goals, the Hawks scored three times on the power play, overcoming future Stanley Cup winner Ruslan Fedotenko and the visiting Sioux City Musketeers for a 5-4 shootout win.
It is the only time Waterloo has ever hosted a home game on the night before Thanksgiving.
Now in 2020 - exactly 22 years to-the-day later - the Hawks will host the Lincoln Stars on Thanksgiving Eve, Wednesday November 25th at 7:05 p.m.
"Our team has played a lot of road games on the Wednesday ahead of the holiday; this year we wanted to do something different and special in conjunction with Waterloo's 50th Thanksgiving game," said Black Hawks President of Business Operations Joe Greene. "This Thanksgiving will obviously be a little different due to socially distant seating, so we are very glad to be able to host this Wednesday night game - as well as the traditional Thursday game - and provide another alternative in a year when tickets will be scarce."
Several hundred single-game tickets will be available for November 25th, Thanksgiving, and all other games at Young Arena under provisions of the Black Hawks' COVID-19 Readiness Plan. That is a relatively small percentage of the rink's normal seating capacity. The team encourages fans to consider the Thanksgiving Eve game as an alternative if they have a holiday conflict or if the supply of Thanksgiving tickets becomes exhausted. More details about ticket sales dates for Thanksgiving week will be forthcoming.
The Black Hawks plan to use the Wednesday night game versus Lincoln to encourage everyone to think about what they are thankful for this autumn. In the weeks ahead of the game, fans will have the opportunity to download and complete an "I'm thankful for..." sign. Selfies with these signs which are shared with the team will appear on Young Arena's video board throughout the November 25th game.
Each day this week, the Black Hawks have been releasing Thanksgiving-related news. On Monday, the team revealed a special logo and limited edition t-shirt design. Tuesday featured information about a commemorative Thanksgiving book which is now available.
