Guelph Storm News Release

This past weekend, the Storm had a very successful Northern road trip, defeating the Sudbury Wolves on Friday by a score of 5-2 before heading to Sault Ste. Marie, where they bested the Greyhounds 5-3.

Friday night, the team got out to a very quick start, when Francis Menard scored 14 seconds into the first period. Cody McNaughton would also score his fifth powerplay goal of the year in the first. After a point shot by Stephen Gaskin beat Wolves' goalie Johan Mattsson, Tyler Bertuzzi scored his first career goal, fittingly against his hometown team, before the Wolves would get on the board to end the second. The Storm would score once more in the third, on a goal by Scott Kosmachuk. However, before the game ended, the Wolves powerplay would beat Brandon Foote, who was named first star of the game.

Saturday night in the Soo didn't start quite as well for the Storm who were down by two goals eight minutes into the first. Garret Sparks would be brought in and the team rebounded with a goal by Zack Mitchell to end the first 2-1 for the Hounds. Guelph would storm back in the second, with goals by Brock McGinn and another by Mitchell to pull ahead 3-2. Soo would convert on a powerplay chance midway through the period to tie the game, but the Storm would end the period ahead 4-3 on a late tally by Tanner Richard. Francis Menard would get the insurance goal in the third, and the Storm would head home with a 5-3 win to end a 4 point weekend.

The Storm have a busy weekend ahead, starting Friday night, when they host the Erie Otters at the Sleeman Centre at 7:30 pm. Then the team hit the road, visiting Sarnia to play the Sting on Saturday at 7:00 pm and then Sunday they are in Brampton for a 2:00 pm game.

On Friday night against the Sudbury Wolves, the 19 year-old picked up an assist on McNaughton's power play goal in the Storm's 5-2 victory. On Saturday in Sault Ste. Marie, Richard had his best game of the year so far picking up one goal and three assists in the Storm's 5-3 victory. The Storm Face-Off in Movember Battle

This November, Guelph Storm players will face-off in an epic battle off the ice, a battle of the moustache or "MO" against their longtime community partner and presenting sponsor, Skyline, to raise awareness for Movember.

Movember is an annual charity event staged in the month of November designed to change the face of men's health (figuratively and literally). Men across Canada and all over the world - called "MO Bros" - are encouraged to grow a moustache during the month to help raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer. Everyone starts from a clean shaven state on November 1st and works towards growing the best MO in town in time for the final MO showdown on November 30th. It's the MO Bros themselves that become men's health advocates for the month and are literally walking and talking billboards for 30 days. Women can also join in the fun by signing up as "MO Sistas" to help encourage their MO Bros in their cause.

"Awareness and education alters behavior and mind-sets; it gradually breaks down barriers, starts conversation, removes stigmas and brings about real change. Movember wants men to take responsibility for their health, prevent illness by leading a healthy lifestyle and understand the symptoms and signs in both themselves and others so they can appreciate when and how to seek help if needed." - movember.com

A group of Storm players will compete against the three founders of Skyline and their staff who make up the "Skyline MOs", to raise local awareness around men's health in the community and beyond.

"We are very excited to be participating in this great campaign as I'm sure we have all been affected by cancer in some way, in this case specifically men's cancer, and this is our chance to put the spotlight on this issue. We encourage all local businesses to put a MO team together and take the challenge with us" says Martin Castellan, Co-Founder of Skyline and Team Captain of the Skyline MOs.

"Movember is a great opportunity for our team to support a worthy cause and it's a fun way to bring awareness to cancers affecting men. I look forward to seeing what kind of moustaches our guys can grow. We encourage all fans to join in not only by donating, but by becoming active participants as well" says Storm Assistant Captain Kyle Pereira.

Fans attending Storm games during the month of November can look forward to fun "Movember" activities over the next few weeks.

For more information about Movember, please visit the official campaign website, Movember.com. If you would like to support the "Storm MOs" and the "Skyline MOs", please go to guelphstorm.com to make a donation and see weekly update photos on the MO growing progress of each of the teams.

Storm and Gryphons Coach4Food

The Guelph Storm in conjunction with the Guelph Gryphons and the Guelph Food Bank are pleased to announce that they will participate in the successful Coach4Food program throughout the 2011-12 season.

Originating in North Bay, Coach4food is a program started by Tom Hedican, a professional goaltending consultant and University of Guelph alumnus, wherein his coaching services at local minor hockey practices is offered in exchange for food donations.

Over a three week period in December the program started in 2005 raising 1,000 pounds of food and has since exploded to 107, 969 pounds raised in 2010, just its sixth year running. The program has become the North Bay Food Bank's single largest fundraiser.

"Coach4Food is especially meaningful for us because its founder, Tom Hedican, is a University of Guelph graduate and played goal on back-to-back provincial championship teams," said Guelph men's hockey coach Shawn Camp.

"This is a win, win, win situation. Local minor hockey players get a chance to be coached by some of the top coaches in North America; the food bank gets some much needed supplies at a critical time of the year; and young hockey players get a chance to contribute to their community, particularly to those who may be a little less fortunate and in need of a hand. The hockey community has a reputation for being generous and this is another example of the Storm, the Gryphons and youth hockey working together for a common goal," Storm Vice President and GM Mike Kelly said.

This year the Storm and Gryphons will exchange high calibre, NHL style drills for donations to the Guelph Food Bank. All minor hockey teams are encouraged to participate with the top four earning (donating) teams winning a practice ran by the Guelph Storm and the University of Guelph Men's Hockey team. The team that donates the most food to the food bank will receive free tickets to an upcoming Storm game as well as on ice recognition with a puck drop to start the game.

If teams would prefer they can donate money instead as every dollar collected is equal to approximately 1.5lbs food and allows the food bank to purchase things they don't get donated such as diapers, baby food etc. The cutoff date for collecting all food and money is December 9th at 5:00pm.

Everyone from NHL Stanley Cup and Olympic Gold Medal winning coach Ken Hitchcock, to rock legend Bruce Springsteen, a vocal supporter of food banks, has endorsed Coach4Food.

Hedican is based in North Bay but works as a goaltending consultant for professional hockey teams in the top league in Switzerland. He will be co-ordinating the effort in the Niagara-St. Catharines region with the Niagara IceDogs and Brock Badgers and in Guelph with the Storm and Gryphons.

If your team would like to take part, you can contact Sarah Twigger at stwigger@guelphstorm.com or 519-837-9690 ext. 104.
