Guelph Storm News Release
Facing two struggling teams this past weekend, the Storm were able to come away with 3 of a possible 4 points. After losing in overtime on Friday to the Brampton Battalion, the team stormed back against Saginaw on Sunday to pick up the win.
Friday night, the Battalion got two early goals before the Storm were able to get on the board with a goal from Andrey Pedan to close the first period. After a scoreless second, the Storm made a comeback attempt when goals by Tanner Richard and Matt Finn put the Storm ahead 3-2.
Then, with just over a minute remaining and the Storm killing a penalty, the Battalion managed to tie the game. Dylan Blujus got the game winner for the Battalion in overtime, making the final score 4-3.
Closing out the Thanksgiving weekend on Sunday, the Storm faced Saginaw for the first time this season, after losing to the Spirit in the first round of last year's playoffs. Despite an early goal to open the game by Zack Mitchell, the Storm saw themselves behind by a score of 3-1 heading into the third period. The game however, was by no means over, as Mitchell, Ryan Horvat, Pedan, Scott Kosmachuk and Cody McNaughton would all tally in the third, while Garret Sparks stood tall in the Storm net, to take the game 6-3.
Coming up this weekend, the Storm face the Peterborough Petes, who also have a record of 4-1-1-1, on Friday night at 7:30 pm at the Sleeman Centre before heading down the 401 to take on the London Knights on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
Finn Named Player of the Week
The Guelph Storm announced today that defenceman Matt Finn is Player of the Week for the week ending Sunday, October 9th.
Finn led all Storm defencemen in points this week picking up four with one goal and three assists in two games over the Thanksgiving weekend. Named First Star against the Battalion, Finn assisted on Tanner Richard's third period goal and scored what appeared to be the winner in the third period of Friday's heartbreaking 4-3 overtime loss. On Thanksgiving Sunday at the Sleeman Centre, the Toronto native assisted on Andrey Pedan's winning goal in the third and helped set up Cody McNaughton later in the Storm's 6-3 come from behind victory over the Spirit. He was also a plus two on the weekend.
Guelph's first round pick last season, Finn has enjoyed a great start to his NHL Draft season currently sitting sixth in scoring among all Storm players and first in defence scoring with eight points. Recording two goals, six assists with three multi point games already this season, the 17 year old ranks third in OHL defence scoring.
