Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - The Tri-City Storm started fast, using three first-period goals to best the Omaha Lancers, 5-1, on opening night in front of a raucous Viaero Wireless Center crowd.
Defensemen John Marino had three assists and five different Storm players potted goals in Bill Muckalt's first game as Storm Head Coach.
The rush started early, both from the crowd and Carson Meyer. The Storm forward potted the first goal of the season at 3:48 of the first, deflecting Tory Dello's point shot from the left face-off dot. Limoges' faceoff win got it back to Dello, and both earned assists.
Four minutes later, Storm defensemen Marino and Mattias Goransson began their strong evenings. Goransson started the rush from the Storm boards in the defensive zone, Marino accepted his pass, and the defenseman filtered it to Sternschein. The winger's rip from the left circle bested Kris Oldham, who earned the loss and was pulled after making eight first-period saves.
Goransson finished with a pair of assists in the contest. The defenseman had 21 assists and 28 points for Tri-City last season, the most for a returning blue liner.
Long completed the three-goal first with a far-post shot that best Oldham for the final time in the frame at the 16:08 mark. Limoges and Marino earned helpers.
While the Storm scored, Matt Greenfield consistently made saves, stopping 21 Omaha shots for his first USHL win. The goaltender joins the Storm from the OHL, where he played for the Kitchener Rangers.
Greenfield faltered just once, giving up a goal to Nathan Krusko, unassisted, at the 4:55 mark in the third. Greenfield also assisted on Nico Sturm's goal in the second for the netminder's first point of the campaign.
Before the Krusko goal, Tri-City extended its lead to five with two late-period goals in the second. Sturm and Jake Wahlin both tallied for Tri-City six minutes apart.
First, Sturm deked from the left board, skated towards the net, and backhanded a shot past Zack Skog, who replaced Oldham for the final two periods and made 19 saves. Goransson and Greenfield got the assists.
Jake Wahlin, the Storm's leading returning scorer, received a feed from John Marino at the 18:16 mark of the second and rifled a wrister past Skog, assisted by Marino and Nolan Aibel to give the Storm a 5-0 edge.
Tri-City's next games are Friday, October 3, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, October 4, at 7:00 p.m. against the Chicago Steel.
The Storm are next home to the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Friday, October 9, at 7:30 p.m. on Commemorative Night.
