The Thunder have not played a regular season game at the Coliseum since April 11, in a 3-1 win over the Green Bay Gamblers. In that game both Vlad Dzhioshvili (Cornell University) and Mitchell Mattson (University of North Dakota) netted goals for the Thunder as affiliates. They are both back for the season and Mattson finished competing in the CCM All-American Prospects Game in Buffalo, NY Thursday night. He recorded two shots in the game representing the Thunder.

In the preseason Logan Lambdin and Steven Merl led the team with eight points each through 6 games. Lambdin had four goals in one game for the Thunder to finish the preseason with a team high six goals. It was the first hat trick recorded by the Thunder in preseason or regular season history. Both goaltenders Hayden Lavigne (University of Michigan) and Logan Halladay (University of Minnesota) played equal time in the preseason and now the battle is for the starting job.

Waterloo loses two top NHL draft picks in the offseason in Brock Boeser (University of North Dakota, Vancouver Canucks) and Thomas Novak (University of Minnesota, Nashville Predators) who were first and third round selections in the draft. However they do return top talent between the pipes with goaltender Cale Morris (University of Notre Dame). Morris finished the season with the Black Hawks with 28 games, a 19-6-3 record, 1.85 GAA, 3 shutouts, and a .935 SVPT. Also returning are Niko Hildenbrand and Ronnie Hein (Ferris State University) to help the newcomers like NHL draft pick David Cotton (Boston College, Carolina Hurricanes). The Black Hawks finish the preseason 3-3-0 with a -1 goal differential.
