Tri-City Storm News Release
KEARNEY, Neb. - To say that Tri-City Storm head coach and general manager Josh Hauge was happy with the way Phase 1 of the 2013 USHL Draft turned out Monday night would be an understatement.
"I'm extemely excited," Hauge said. "We got some talented guys that we think can come in and compete for spots next year, but we still built ourselves for the future."
After the Storm signed Tory Dello to a tender agreement in December, making him their first round selection, they were able to add a both talented scorers and puck-moving defenseman to their future. Dello is committed to play collegiately at Notre Dame.
Phase 1 of the Draft included players born in 1997. The draft had 120 total selections through eight rounds.
Tri-City secured a total of four forwards and three defenseman to help themselves in the future.
The first Storm selection of the night was Matt Freytag, a forward from Wayzata, Minn. who plays for Wayzata High school. This season, Freytag scored 22 goals and added 15 assists in 31 games while leading Wayzata to the state tournament.
Hauge got to know Freytag over the past few weeks while coaching him at the USHL Combine outside of Chicago.
"He's a pure goal-scorer and dynamic skater," Hauge said of Freytag. "He'll be special to watch."
Tri-City added another forward in the third round with Nolan Aibel, who hails from Brookville, N.Y. and played for the New Jersey Rockets this season. After Aibel came Logan Fauber, a defenseman from Longmont, Colo.
"In the first three picks we wanted to have two forwards and a defenseman," Hauge said. "Nolan Aible already has committed to Yale. He'll fight for a spot on the team next year and Logan Fauber is a tough, steady and solid defenseman that can move pucks well."
In the final four rounds the Storm chose Karch Bachman of Wolcottville, Ind., Michael Joyaux of Bloomingdale, Ill. who recently committed to Miami, Jason Krych of Champlin, Minn., and Alec Mehr of Irvine, Calif.
"I think Karch Bachman being available was a steal," Hauge said. "Joyaux and Krych are both skilled puck-movers that are going to get up in the play and that's what we're all about. We feel like we got great value in the last four picks and they're guys that we even talked about taking earlier in the draft."
A full list of the Storm's picks is below.
"The guys we got fit in with how we want to play and are skilled hockey players," Hauge said. "We got guys that can play hard, finish hits and be physical."
The Storm will host a Draft Party during Phase 2 on Tuesday afternoon at the Viaero Event Center. All fans are invited to come out and see the staff in action as they select future Storm players and get inside information on each selection. Bar-b-que food will be served during the party. Fans are welcome at the event center anytime between 4 and 7 p.m.
