
Saints Select Eight During Phase 1 of USHL Draft Monday

DUBUQUE, Iowa-The Dubuque Fighting Saints selected eight players during Phase 1 of the USHL Entry Draft Monday night that look to be a large part of the club's future. The draft, formally known as the Future's Draft, was exclusively for players born in 1997. Dubuque's top pick at 15th overall was forward Gordie Green from the Detroit Compuware Minor Midget who hails from Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Green is a right-winger who stands at 5-foot-7 and 143 lbs. In 26 games this past season, Green struck for 15 goals, 21 assists, for 36 points. Green is committed to Miami University and is regarded as a smart player with speed and pace.
In the second round, 30th overall, Dubuque took blueliner Michael Davies from Kirkwood, Missouri. Davies is 5-foot-8 and 155 lbs. and played for the St. Louis Blues U16 team this past season. One of the top puck moving defensemen for his age, Davies scored six goals and added 24 assists for 30 points this past season in only 38 games.
With the 45th overall pick in the third round, the Fighting Saints selected Spencer Young from Phillips Exter Academy. The 5-foot-10, 160 lbs. blueliner hails from Brentwood, New Hampshire and tallied eight assists last season. Young is considered a strong puck mover but more of a stay at home defensemen who is strong in his own zone.
The Fighting Saints fourth round selection, 60th overall, was Chase Harwell, a forward who hails from Selects Academy Minor Midget. He is committed to Quinnipiac University.
In the fifth round at 75th overall, Dubuque took forward Lincoln Griffin who scored 14 goals and 23 assists in 23 games for Thayer Academy. Griffin stands at 5-foot-10 and 155 lbs. and hails from Walpole, Massachusetts. Griffin is committed to Northeastern University and led his team in scoring as a sophomore.
In the sixth round, Dubuque went back to the Detroit Compuware program to select Gordie Green's teammate, Colin Theisen, with the 90th overall selection. An undersize player from Monroe, Michigan, Theisen scored 20 points in 26 games this past season. He stands at 5-foot-8 and 138 lbs.
The Fighting Saints selected their lone goaltender of the draft in round seven, picking Elijah Harris, a 5-foot-6, 130 lbs. native of Haverhill, Massachusetts. This past season for Austin Prep, Harris recorded a 2.45 GAA and a .904 SV%. Harris has good lateral movement and is a strong puck handler according to scouts.
The Fighting Saints held the final pick of Phase 1 of the USHL Draft and used the pick to select Derek Hamelin, a defensemen from Mercier, Quebec. In 2012-13 for the Wilkes Barre/Scranton Jr. Knights U16 team, Hamelin tallied a goal and seven assists for eight points Hamelin stands at 5-foot-11 and 167 pounds and will fill out as he continues to grow and develop. Scouts regard him as a smart player who makes a strong first pass.
The draft was Dubuque's first under Mike Field, who took over as the Director of Scouting for Bobby Kinsella this summer after Kinsella accepted a job with the Montreal Canadiens. The draft continues tomorrow with Phase 2 of the draft, which consists of players from multiple birth years as USHL teams look to fill their protected lists with players who will compete for roster spots for the 2013-14 season. Phase 2 starts at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday and live results will be posted on USHL.com.
As the Fighting Saints staff continues to build for the future, the current group of 23 players are preparing for the Clark Cup Final this weekend. Game 1 is Friday, May 10 at 7:35 p.m. at the Mystique Community Ice Center. The first 1,500 fans receive a rally towel courtesy of Mystique Casino. Game 2 is the following night, Saturday, May 11 at 7:05 p.m. in Dubuque. If needed, a decisive Game 5 would be played on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:05 p.m. at the Mystique Community Ice Center.
