Buccaneers Select Eight on Opening Day of USHL Draft

Urbandale (IA) The Des Moines Buccaneers selected eight players as part of the United States Hockey League's Draft Phase I (formerly the "Futures Draft") held on Monday night. Only those players with a 1997 birth year were eligible in this draft as the USHL Draft Phase I annually consists of only those players who are going to be 16 years of age in eligibilityfor the following season.

The USHL Draft Phase II (formerly the "Entry Draft") will take place on Tuesday night and includes all eligible players.

"We're excited by the group of players that we were able to pick up in this draft and they will be excellent additions to the organizations" said head coach and general manager Jon Rogger. "Any team's long-term success is built on having a good (Draft Phase I) and that has been proven over the last number of seasons.

Selection (3rd overall) - Tom Novak Forward 5'11, 165 August 28, 1997

River Falls, WI - St. Thomas Academy (Minnesota)

31 GP, 28 goals, 29 assists, 57 points, 6 PIM

Rogger: "He is one of the top forwards in the country who is highly skilled and tough to

knock off the puck. He always scores the big time goals in close games and has great hands.

Selection (11th overall) - Ryan Dmowski Forward 6'0, 175 March 18, 1997

Oakdale, CT - Gunnery School (Connecticut)

Rogger: " He is a solid player who is highly skilled with good skating ability. He is

potential NHL draft pick with room to grow physically."

Selection (18th overall) - Tarek Baker Forward 5'10, 180 February 22, 1997

Verona, WI - Omaha AAA U16 (Nebraska)

67 GP, 34 goals, 61 assists, 95 points

Rogger: " A smaller, gritty forward who will adjust to Buccaneer Arena nicely. Tarek

will do whatever it takes to win and will be an exceptional penalty kill guy with

possible power play time.

Selection (23rd overall) - Tanner Tweten Forward 6'0, 190 June 14, 1997

East Grand Ford, MN - East Grand Forks High School (Minnesota)

31 GP, 17 goals, 18 assists, 35 points, 16 PIM

Rogger: " Tanner is a big power forward with a NHL frame. He has a ton of upside and

we will look to have him punsh players in Buccaneer Arena.

The players the Buccaneers selected on Monday will be invited to the team's tryout camp June 13-16 and if not selected for the 2013-2014 team will be placed on the team's affiliate list for up to three seasons.

The Des Moines Buccaneers are preparing for their 34th consecutive season in the United States Hockey League. Since 1980, the Buccaneers have produced hundreds of NCAA Division I players and dozens of professional alumni.
