Stingrays Re-sign Veterans MacLean, Reid
July 11, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
North Charleston, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and head coach Jared Bednar announced today that right winger Cail MacLean and center Matt Reid have re-signed with the team for the 2007-08 season. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
MacLean, 30, finished second on the Stingrays with 25 goals last year, including 17 power play markers that led the team and placed 5th in the ECHL. Reid, 29, potted a team-high 29 goals in 2006-07 and finished third in team scoring with 60 points in 48 games.
"What those two guys bring to the table - it's something every coach is looking for," Bednar said. "They were my priority; as soon as the [2006-07] season ended, I wanted to get those guys signed."
A native of Middleton, Nova Scotia, MacLean will be entering his 11th season as a pro and second as Stingrays captain. In two seasons with South Carolina, the 5-foot-11, 195-pound veteran has registered 91 points (42 goals, 49 assists) in 106 regular season contests.
"Cail has a very calming influence and is just a real character guy," Bednar said. "You can't say enough for what he does with our locker room. He'll be heavily relied upon this year, especially with not having another coach to look in on things."
Over his professional career, MacLean has skated for 15 different teams, amassing 245 goals and 233 assists for 478 points in 684 career games. He reached the Kelly Cup Finals with the Trenton Titans in 2001.
Reid returns for his fourth season in the Lowcountry. In addition to the 48 games he played with the Stingrays in 2006-07, the Massena, NY native suited up for four American Hockey League contests - three with the Hershey Bears and one with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers - collecting three assists.
"He's our emotional leader on the ice and in the locker room," Bednar said about Reid. "He has a huge heart, gives it his all every night, and empties the tank when he's out on the ice. He's been arguably our MVP these last few years."
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound center has registered 178 points (78 goals, 100 assists) in 164 career contests with South Carolina, good enough for 10th in franchise history. His 78 career goals stand 7th all-time in Stingrays history.
During his seven-year professional career, Reid has amassed 161 goals and 230 assists for 391 points in 423 games. Prior to turning pro, he spent three years with Clarkson University.
