Charlotte Checkers News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Checkers are happy to announce that Mark Smith, brother of Checkers defenseman Kenton Smith, has agreed to terms with the club. Smith will be entering his first season as a professional after spending four seasons with the University of Alaska-Anchorage.

Smith, native of Edmonton, Alberta, garnered 47 points (16G, 31A) and 104 PIM's in 129 collegiate games. Smith is happy to be turning pro and is looking forward to the season, "this is a very exciting opportunity and it's a dream come true to play with my brother, Kenton. I have never played in the pro game so I am thrilled to start a new adventure."

Head coach of the Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, believes the future is bright for Mark, "He is a highly-regarded offensive defenseman who should develop into a great pro."

The Checkers enter their 15th season of play as a member of the ECHL in October 2007. In the team's 14-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 10 times including three-consecutive playoff appearances to date. The Checkers will enter their third season of play at St. Lawrence Homes Home Ice at Charlotte Bobcats Arena this fall. Season tickets are on sale now with full-season packages starting at just $399.
