Stingrays Fall Hard in Playoff Opener Against Augusta
April 10, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Augusta, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays struck first in the opening game of the playoffs, but fell in the end by a final of 5-2 to the Augusta Lynx at the James Brown Arena.
"The guys played hard, but it was the bounces that went Augusta's way," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "Obviously it was a tough loss, but we'll be ready to go on Saturday, and turn this series around."
The South Carolina Stingrays certainly got out to the start they were looking for in the first period of play. Just :50 seconds into the period Paul McIlveen got a pass from Matt Smith from behind the net and gave the Stingrays a 1-0 lead. The goal was assisted by Smith and Marty Guerin. Anthony Battaglia got his first goal of the game to tie things up at one at 11:52 of the period. By the time the period had concluded, the Lynx had added two more, taking a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.
South Carolina cut into the lead in the second period when Sean Collins got a pass from Sasha Pokulok at the blue line, and fired it past Bobby Goepfert. The goal came at 5:10 of the second period and made the score 3-2. No sooner had the Rays cut the lead down to one, it was back at two when Adrian Veideman scored past Davis Parley to make it a 4-2 game after two periods of play.
Early in the third period, newly returned Aaron Slattengren scored to make it a 5-2 score, the eventual final. Parley was removed from the game after the fifth goal was scored, and replaced by Josh Johnson who played the final 18:24.
The winning goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 28 of the 30 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Parley who stopped 14 of the 19 shots he faced in 41:36. Johnson stopped all six shots that came his way. The Rays were 0-4 on the power play while killing off three of the four short handed situations they faced.
The Rays are back in action Saturday night when they play game two of this best of five series against the Augusta Lynx. Game time will be at 7:05 P.M
