April 10, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Texas Wildcatters News Release
Beaumont, TX--Cleve Kinley had four points as the Texas Wildcatters moved to the brink of a series victory taking Game 2 from the Mississippi Sea Wolves 5-2 Thursday night.
The Wildcatters posted three power play goals, a shorthanded tally, and John McNabb scored on a penalty shot as special teams continued to be a huge factor in this series.
Kevin Baker began the scoring for the Catters with a power play goal midway through the first period, deflecting a hard pass from Kinley in the mid-slot past the glove of Wolves goaltender Ryan Munce.
Kinley would one-time a pass from the slot less than five minutes later for another power play goal that gave the Catters a commanding 2-0 lead at the first intermission.
McNabb would be awarded a penalty shot after being tripped on a shorthanded breakaway at 16:35 of the second period. After a fake to the backhand, McNabb went up high on the forehand side to make the score 3-0 and deal a crushing blow to the visiting the Sea Wolves.
Max Taylor would collect the puck at the top of the circles, juggle it in midair through a defenseman and tip it past Munce for a beautiful goal that made the score 4-0 at the second break.
Jason Tejchma, who finished the night with both Mississippi goals, scored two minutes into the final period, but Kinley would counter with his second of the night and second of the playoffs at 4:32 to make the score 4-1.
Tempers flared in the third, as 19 separate infractions and multiple game misconducts were issued in the final 20 minutes, resulting in several lengthy stoppages.
Tejchma would get his second after a such a stall in the action, appearing to take recently-crowned ECHL Rbk Hockey Goalie of the Year, Anton Khudobin by surprise with a quick snap shot from the bottom of the left circle to bring the score to 5-2.
Khudobin finished the game with 28 saves on 30 shots while Munce managed 28 saves on 33 shots.
Texas finished the game 3-for-11 on the power play and added two shorthanded goals while holding Mississippi to 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
Texas can close out the best-of-five series should they win Game 3, slated for 7:05 Saturday in Biloxi, MS.
If necessary, Game 4 would take place Sunday in Mississippi and Game 5 would be Tuesday, April 15 back at Ford Arena.
