South Carolina Stingrays News Release

Augusta, GA - The South Carolina Stingrays looked to tie up their best of series at one game a piece, but instead fell in overtime by a final of 4-3 at the James Brown Arena in Augusta, GA.

"It's really disheartening," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "I like the way our guys played. I thought we played well enough to win in game one, and certainly well enough to win tonight. We just need to look ahead to game three and try to forget about this one."

The Rays came out very quickly and looked strong in the first period getting the first goal of the game from Stephen Werner who came down from Springfield in the AHL yesterday. Werner scored unassisted at 10:05 of the first period making it 1-0 Stingrays. But a power play goal by the Lynx Travis Fuller at 13:20 tied the game up at one going into the first intermission. It was the second time in as many games that the Rays heavily out shot the Lynx in the first period, this time to a tune of 19-7, but didn't have the lead.

The second period saw South Carolina again have the majority of the chances, and finally saw them capitalize when Marty Guerin got a power play goal at 14:23 of the period. Guerin got the pass from Travis Morin on a break away, and the Stingrays had a 2-1 lead after two periods of play.

In the third period, the Rays extended their lead when Travis Morin got his first goal of the post season. Tim Judy got off a long pass to Cail MacLean who put it on the stick of Morin to make it a 3-1 game. The goal came at 5:27 of the third period. But a goal by Augusta by Jamie McKinven made it a one goal game, and lead to an extra attacker final minute goal by Augusta's Aaron Slattengren, to tie the game up at the end of regulation.

In overtime, both teams saw chances, until Bobby Bolt got his first goal of the playoffs at 7:19, and won the game for the Augusta Lynx, giving them a 2-0 lead in the series, as it heads back to the North Charleston Coliseum.

The winning goaltender was Bobby Goepfert who stopped 42 of the 45 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Davis Parley who stopped 27 of the 31 shots he faced. The Rays went 1-8 on the power play, while killing off four of the five short handed situations they faced.

The Rays are back in action Monday night when they play game three of this best of five series against the Augusta Lynx.
