Cyclones Take Two Game Lead Over Johnstown With 4-1 Triumph
April 12, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Cyclones got a pair of goals from Mathieu Aubin in a 4-1 win over Johnstown Saturday night at U.S. Bank Arena. The win gives the Cyclones a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven North Division semifinals series. Goaltender Max Daigneault turned aside 25 shots in collecting the win.
The largest crowd in Cyclones history, 4847, turned out for the game. The total of 8323 was the highest two game total in a North/Northern Division semifinal playoff series in the ECHL since 1999-when 9342 turned out for the opening games of the Richmond at Hampton Roads round. It was also the biggest crowd to see a playoff game in a North Division building since game four of the 2005 Kelly Cup finals-when 7126 turned out in Trenton. The Cyclones are averaging 4161 per game in the postseason-second-best in the ECHL.
The Cyclones netted the lone goal of the first period, as Mathieu Aubin collected his second goal in as many nights at 14:46. Aubin potted his score on the power play from Sean Perkins and Olivier Latendresse. Aubin snapped off a shot from the left wing side to lift the lid on the scoring,
Following a scoreless second period that saw Cincinnati outshoot the Chiefs, 20-4, a three goal attack in the third period sealed the triumph. Matt Syroczynski and Bailly Irish-Baker netted goals 15 seconds apart midway through the third period to open a 3-0 edge. Johnstown got its lone goal at 14:50-when Andrew Martens tallied a score in a goal mouth scramble. An empty net goal by Aubin with 1.9 seconds remaining closed the scoring.
This was the second game of the best-of-seven North Division semifinals. The Cyclones (55-12-5) were the North Division, American Conference and Brabham Cup (best overall ECHL regular season record) champions. Johnstown (36-30-6), which is seeded fourth, upended fifth-seeded Dayton in a two game sweep earlier this week to advance to this round. The third contest will be played Tuesday night-April 15-at the Cambria County War Memorial at 7pm. The game will be carried on 96 Rock, as well as on www.cycloneshockey.com.
The winner of this semifinals series will meet the winner of the Elmira vs. Reading series that also began last night. The series is tied at 1-1, following a 5-4 Reading win in overtime..
