Johnstown Chiefs News Release
Cincinnati, OH - The Johnstown Chiefs still couldn't find a way to win a game at U.S. Bank Arena, and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday night.
For the first time in this year's Kelly Cup Playoffs the Chiefs were not able to score in the first forty seconds of the game, and were unable to score first period. Cincinnati's Mathieu Aubin scored on a slap shot from the left point at 14:46 of the first, while on the power play, for the 1-0 lead.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the second period, but it was Ryan Nie stealing the show with some sparkling goaltending. The most brilliant save of the 20 he made in the second period came on a diving stab with his blocker. Nie had lost his stick, and instead of shooting from close range, Olivier Latendresse sent a pass across the crease to David Desharnais. Nie looked down-and-out but made a great reaching save that left Desharnais shaking his head. Johnstown was outshot 20-to-4 in the second.
The Cyclones kept sending pressure on net, and were able to score twice in close in a span of 15 seconds to take a 3-0 lead. Syroczynski (11:11) scored his first of the playoffs on a feed from Desharnais, and Billy Irish-Baker added his first, as well, at 11:26 to make it 3-0.
Andrew Martens finally cracked Maxime Daigneault at 14:50 to give the Chiefs some life. Joey Olson had the first crack at a rebound off of a shot by Nathan Saunders from the left point, but Daigneault turned him aside. Olson kept the Cyclones netminder from reaching the puck, though, and Martens slammed it home. Aubin would add an empty-net goal to set the final score.
Ryan Nie made 39 saves while taking the loss, and the Chiefs' power play unit went 0-for-5.
