South Carolina Stingrays News Release
Trenton, NJ -The South Carolina Stingrays (11-13-1-0) erased a two-goal deficit in the second period to defeat the Trenton Devils (9-12-0-2) 3-2 in the shootout at the Sun National Bank Center Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, Devils defenseman Brad Miller opened the scoring on the power play at 8:12 of the second frame from forwards Ryan Ginand and Ryan Hayes. Trenton grabbed a 2-0 lead at 11:36 when Ginand flipped a shot over the glove of Stingrays goaltender Jared DeMichiel. Defenseman Dave Leaderer registered the lone assist. Stingrays defenseman Johann Kroll pulled the game within one on the power play at 14:59 from forwards Justin Milo and David de Kastrozza. With seconds left in the period, Stingrays forward Jordan Pietrus tied the contest with his first professional goal from defenseman Bryan Schmidt and forward Luke Popko at 19:24.
Both sides failed to light the lamp in the third period and the game quickly moved to overtime. Trenton earned a power play minutes into the extra session, but the Stingrays' penalty kill stood strong to send the contest into a shootout.
After Stingrays forwards Rob Ricci and Milo scored on the breakaway, Popko iced the contest in the seventh round by burying a wrist shot between the legs of Devils goaltender Dave Caruso.
Caruso received the loss stopping 28 of 30 Stingrays shots. DeMichiel earned his sixth win of the season stopping 37 of 39 Devils opportunities. The Rays ended the night 1-for-3 on the power play while the Devils went 1-for-8.
