Stingrays Battle Back, Fall in OT 5-4

Biloxi, MS - The South Carolina Stingrays had the lead with less than two minutes to play, on the strength of three power play goals, but were unable to hold off the Mississippi Sea Wolves as they fell in overtime by a score of 5-4 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.

"Obviously it's disappointing after having the lead so late in the game," said Head Coach Jared Bednar. "But I thought we came here ready to battle and got an important point tonight."

The first period had the Stingrays and Sea Wolves in a defensive stalemate as neither team came away with many chances, only attempting eight and four shots respectively.

The second period was the antithesis of the first as both teams came away with three goals each. The Rays got on the board first on Keith Johnson's third goal of the season, a power play goal from Trent Campbell and Johan Kroll. Shortly there after, the Stingrays found themselves in a bit of penalty trouble and were down five on three. During the five on three, the Sea Wolves tied the game at one on Ryan Cruther's 11th goal of the year at 5:57. A mere :30 seconds later, while still on the power play, Alexandre Parent got his sixth goal of the year to give Mississippi their first lead of the night. The Sea Wolves would get their third power play goal of the night, this time by Matt Deschamps, to make it 3-1.

The Rays climbed back in when Pierre-Luc O'Brien notched his fifth goal of the year at 12:14 of the period, from Campbell and Victor Dovgan to make it 3-2. South Carolina would tie up the game at three on a power play goal by Brad Farynuk, his second goal of the season, from Campbell and Travis Morin at 13:28.

In the third period the Rays took their second lead of the night on a power play goal, their third of the game, when Campbell got his fourth goal of the season at 10:57 from Farynuk and Johan Kroll. The lead would not stand up, however, and with the extra attacker on, and less than two minutes to play, Jason Tejchma got his sixth goal of the year to send the game to overtime.

In overtime, Pat Oliveto got his first goal of the season on a tipped centering pass, behind Bobby Goepfert to seal the win for the Sea Wolves, 5-4.

The winning goaltender was Ryan Munce who stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced. The losing goaltender was Goepfert who stopped 15 of the 20 shots he faced. The Rays went three for four on the power play while killing off five of the eight short handed situations they faced.

The Rays will be back in action tomorrow night when they play their second game against Mississippi. Game time will be at 8:00 P.M. eastern time. You can hear the game live on Sports Radio 1450 starting with the Benitos pre-game show beginning at 7:50.
