St. Cloud Rox News Release

The St. Cloud Rox clawed and fought but could not overtake the Willmar Stingers on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Faber Field. The Stingers prevailed by a final score of 5-4 and improved their record to 13-9, while the Rox fall to 5-16.

After a scoreless top of the first was tossed by Rox starter Tadd Johansen (Wayne State), the St.

Cloud bats went to work in the bottom half. Chris Paul (California) started the half with a booming triple to left center field. Paul scored when the next batter, Tony Skjefte (Minnesota), smacked a triple of his own to give the Rox the early 1-0 lead.

The lead increased to 3-0 when Ty Jackson (Washington St) blasted a two-run opposite field home run to right field in the bottom of the third inning.

The Stingers got a lone run in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly, then took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth on a Steven Brault (Regis) three-run blast to right field.

St. Cloud tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when Tony Skjefte (Minnesota) singled home Nick Tanielu (Washington State). However, the Stingers would take the lead for good in the top of the eighth inning when catcher JD Dorgan (St Thomas) doubled home Brault from first base.

Sergio Luna (Cal St-LA) suffered the loss for the Rox after giving up the go-ahead Dorgan double. Luna pitched two innings of three-hit, one-run relief. Willmar reliever Andre Wheeler (TX Tech) got the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Chris Paul was named the St. Cloud Times player of the game after going 2-4 with a pair of triples in the game.

The Rox are at Bill Taunton Stadium on Thursday night to close out the five-game set with the Stingers. Willmar currently leads the series four games to none.
