Arizona Sting News Release
GLENDALE, AZ --- Arizona Sting Head Coach and General Manager Bob Hamley announced Wednesday that he has acquired All-Star forward Derek Malawsky from the San Jose Stealth in exchange for defenseman Andrew Guindon and the seventh overall selection at this year's NLL Entry Draft.
"We're thrilled to be adding Derek to our roster," said Hamley. "He's a proven scorer in this league that gives us some real depth on the left side of our attack."
Malawsky, the younger brother of Sting forward Curt Malawsky, led the Stealth in scoring last season after tallying 20G-30A-50P in 16 games played. The 33-year old native of Coquitlam, British Columbia has amassed 169G-313A-482P over the course of 112 career NLL games as a member of the Ontario Raiders, Buffalo Bandits, Rochester Knighthawks, and San Jose Stealth. Malawsky's most productive season came in 2004 when he scored 24 goals and dished out 54 assists for 78 points as a member of the Knighthawks. In six career playoff matches, the 6'0", 175 lb. forward has tallied 11G-18A-29P.
At the 2006 NLL All-Star Game, Malawsky contributed 1G-2A-3P as the West Division All-Stars, coached by Bob Hamley, came from behind to defeat the East Division by a score of 14-13 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Malawsky assisted on the game-winning goal, which was scored by Calgary's Lewis Ratcliff with 0:05 remaining in regulation.
Andrew Guindon, acquired by the Sting from the Philadelphia Wings last fall, played 12 games for Arizona in 2006. The veteran defender tallied 3G-7A-10P and scooped up 58 loose balls during his tenure in the Valley of the Sun.
The Arizona Sting is a professional indoor lacrosse team playing in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). Their home games are played at the Glendale Arena and their season runs annually from January-April. For more information, please visit www.ArizonaSting.com.
