July 13, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Tyler Stephenson blasted a three-run home run in his first game off the disabled list and four Dayton pitchers combined to allow just three hits as the Dragons defeated the Beloit Snappers 4-1 on Wednesday night. The game was the opener to a three-game series and six-game home stand for the Dragons.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie until the bottom of the seventh inning when Dayton's Reydel Medina launched a lead-off home run to right field to make it 1-0. It was Medina's fifth home run of the year and his second in the last two games.
The Dragons continued to lead 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Mitch Piatnik reached on an infield single and stole second. He was at second with two outs when heavy rain passed through Fifth Third Field, causing a rain delay of 35 minutes. When the game resumed, James Vasquez was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Stephenson, who had been out since May 26 with a sprained left wrist, drilled a 3-2 pitch to the right of the scoreboard in center field to give the Dragons a 4-0 lead. Stephenson's homer was his second of the year.
Beloit posted one run in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Tanner Rainey was outstanding. He worked five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits with three walks and five strikeouts. He threw 90 pitches and was not involved in the decision. Sandy Lugo (1-1) followed Rainey and fired two perfect innings for the win. Lugo struck out the first four batters he faced. Jesus Reyes pitched a perfect eighth inning and Sarkis Ohanian tossed the ninth, allowing one hit and one run that scored on a wild pitch.
The Dragons collected seven hits. Brantley Bell was 2 for 3.
The Dragons have won their last two games and four of the last seven. Dragons pitchers have allowed two runs or less in three of the last five games. The Dragons have scored at least four runs in six of the last seven games.
The Dragons (7-12, 28-61) and Snappers (10-10, 42-47) meet in the second game of the series at Fifth Third Field on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Jacob Constante (4-7, 4.39) will start for the Dragons against Beloit's LH Evan Manarino (7-4, 2.33).
