(Burlington-IA) The Burlington Bees (40-50) opened a six game home stand by defeating the Great Lakes Loons (37-52) 6-2 on Wednesday night at Community Field.
Great Lakes Loons starting pitcher Isaac Anderson opened the game by retiring eight batters in a row before Jake Yacinich reached on an infield single. Michael Hermosillo put the Bees in front by doubling to left center, scoring Yacinich, giving the Bees a 1-0 lead. Jordan Zimmerman then picked up his first hit as a Burlington Bee, doubling off the wall in dead center, scoring Hermosillo, extending the Bees' lead to 2-0.
Great Lakes cut into the Bees' lead in the fourth inning. Omar Estevez and Luke Raley singled with one out in the top of the fourth inning. After a strikeout, Brendon Davis lined a two-strike pitch into left, scoring Estevez, cutting the Bees' lead to 2-1.
The Bees got their two run lead back in the sixth inning. Brendon Sanger started the frame with a walk and then moved to second when Matt Thaiss drew a one out walk. Jordan Serena grounded a ball into left, scoring Sanger, upping the Bees' advantage to 3-1. The Bees opened the game up in the eighth. With one out, Matt Thaiss walked and moved to second on a Jordan Serena single. Alexi Rivera then hammered a three run homerun to right, extending the lead to 6-2.
Great Lakes scored a run in the ninth but the Bees went on to win, 6-2. Bees' starter Jaime Barria (8-4) allowed just one run on five hits, tying a season high with six strikeouts. Isaac Anderson (5-5) was charged with the loss while Zach Hartman (12) earned the save. The Bees and the Loons meet again on Thursday night at 6:30.
