Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH) - Michael Brantley went 2-for-3 with a double and Roberto Perez caught six innings in their Major League rehab appearances with the Lake County Captains on Wednesday night at Classic Park, but it was not enough to help the Captains overcome the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Lake County lost to Cedar Rapids, 8-4, marking the Captains' seventh-straight defeat.

Brantley stepped up to the plate to a roaring ovation in the first inning and responding by lacing a line drive double down the right field line. Two innings later, Brantley hit another laser over the head of Kernels first baseman Zander Wiel for a single. The Cleveland Indians' outfielder later grounded out to second base. He played five innings in left field.

Perez battled with Kernels starting pitcher Cody Stashak in his first trip to the plate on Wednesday. The Indians' catcher worked the count to 3-2 and ended up walking on seven pitches. He later hit a hard ground ball to shortstop for a force out and bounced another ground ball to third. Perez stayed behind the plate to catch six defensive innings.

Cedar Rapids took an early lead against Lake County, but the Captains used the long ball to battle back. After the Kernels scored in the first inning on an RBI single by Wiel, Jose Medina tied the score with a solo homer to right in the second. Connor Marabell then gave the Captains a 2-1 lead with an opposite-field solo home run over the left field wall in the fourth.

Captains starter Brock Hartson could not hold the lead in the fifth inning. Kevin Garcia hit a one-out double and Jermaine Palacios drove him in with two outs on a single to tie the game, 2-2. Luis Arraez then singled and Wiel walked to load the bases. Hartson had a chance to escape the inning with the game still tied, but Jaylin Davis hit a grand slam home run that cleared the wall just to the right of dead centerfield. The blast was Davis' first Midwest League home run of the year and gave Cedar Rapids a 6-2 lead.

The Kernels added a run in the seventh on a wild pitch by Lake County reliever Dominic DeMasi, but the Captains' offense showed signs of life in the seventh. Working against lefty reliever Andrew Vasquez, the Captains scored a pair to pull within three runs, 7-4. Medina scored on a wild pitch and Willi Castro hit a ground ball to drive in Anthony Miller. That was all the Captains could manage, however. The Kernels tacked on one more run against Lake County reliever Leandro Linares in the ninth and Cedar Rapids right-hander Williams Ramirez held the Captains scoreless in the eighth and ninth to earn his second save.

Stashak (6-5) earned the victory, holding Lake County scoreless outside of the two solo home runs. The right-hander gave up two runs over six total innings of work. Stashak gave up six hits, two of which were to Brantley, walked one and struck out five.

Hartson (5-4) gave up six runs over five innings to take the loss. The Captains' starter saw his outing go sour with the Davis grand slam and the Captains' offense could not bail him out. Hartson surrendered eight hits, walked one and struck out three.

Lake County and Cedar Rapids will face off again on Thursday morning at Classic Park. The second game of the three-game series gets underway at 11:00 AM.
